Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture (Mayor: Mikio Uchida), will host an event titled '3-Meter Snowfall: A Taste of Uonuma's Despair and Reward' on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 'The Niigata' information center in Ginza, Tokyo. The event highlights the overwhelming snowfall and the exceptional quality produce it helps create.

[Experiencing Uonuma's 'Despair' and 'Reward' in Mid-Summer Ginza] Located 90 minutes by Shinkansen and 3 hours by car from Tokyo, Uonuma is one of Japan's most heavy snowfall regions, with depths often exceeding 3 meters. In winter, there is no place for gentle, poetic snowscapes here. Every morning, doorways are buried, and digging out a car takes an hour. Climbing onto rooftops to shovel snow is an endless battle. For the local people, winter is a war against 'desperate hard labor.'

Ironically, this 'troublesome snow' is the very thing that grows the world's best rice and produces the clearest ultra-soft water. It also nurtures unique treasures that other regions cannot replicate, such as high-quality vegetables, sake, and wild mountain vegetables. Uonuma is a place where you can experience both the 'despair' and the 'ultimate reward.' We organized this event so that urban residents can experience the 'deliciousness that can only be found beyond this desperate harshness' with their five senses.

The event will include tastings of dishes made with Uonuma ingredients, sampling of a newly developed craft beer using local specialties, and information on tours that allow you to experience Uonuma's 'despair.' Participants will also receive souvenirs.
