GLAM (https://www.glam.jp/), a lifestyle media platform operated by Mode Media Japan that supports the choices of working women in their 40s, conducted a survey of 300 women in their 40s to understand their current 'me time' and changes in values regarding hobbies, solo activities, and re-skilling.

The survey revealed that 'obtaining qualifications and adult re-skilling' was the most popular way women in their 40s wish to invest their time and money in the future. This was followed by 'visiting cafes and enjoying luxury solo lunches' and 'solo travel or staycations (solo activities).' The results suggest that for women in their 40s, 'me time' is no longer just for rest or refreshment, but is viewed as a proactive period to organize their lives for the future.

Current State of 'Me Time' for Women in Their 40s The survey found that 38.0% of respondents have less than one hour of time solely for themselves per day, away from work and household roles, indicating that many women in their 40s find it challenging to secure such time. On the other hand, 34.0% responded that they have 'between one and two hours,' showing an effort to cherish personal time despite limitations.

Interest in Hobbies and Personal Time 66.7% of women reported that they seek new hobbies and time for themselves more strongly now than in their 20s and 30s. While 'stress relief and refreshment' (33.5%) remains the primary reason for seeking 'me time,' 'finding a purpose for the second half of life' (31.0%) and 'wanting to forget roles and return to my true self' (19.5%) were also significant, indicating a shift from simple leisure to a desire to rediscover personal identity.
