The Japan Open Innovation Research Association (JOIRA) has released the results of its 'Open Innovation Survey 2025,' which surveyed 255 Japanese companies. The study analyzed the reality of external collaboration activities, including new business creation, startup partnerships, industry-academia collaboration, and regional co-creation. It revealed common organizational structures and executive characteristics among 'high-performing companies.' The first chapter is now publicly available, with further analysis to be provided to JOIRA newsletter subscribers and event participants. The survey found that 'new business creation' (80.4%) is the primary goal of external collaboration. High-performing companies showed a strong tendency for executives to be actively involved in expanding external networks and decision-making. Furthermore, the survey identified that innovation models vary by company size: small firms favor top-down approaches, large firms favor bottom-up approaches, and medium-sized firms utilize a hybrid model.
