July 20th is Marine Day. Won't you join us to think about the ocean, essential to our lives, and the creatures that inhabit it, through a documentary screening and guest talk?
Background of the Documentary
Scott Reef lies 300 km off the coast of Western Australia.
Formed over 15 million years, this area is home to over 1,200 species, including the endangered green sea turtle, beautiful corals, and fish. Rare whales, including pygmy blue whales, also stop here to rest.
However, Scott Reef is now facing a crisis.
Several companies, including a major Japanese general trading company, are planning to drill a massive gas reserve called Browse, located near this coral reef. "Corals' Last Stand" is a work by a team of writers, musicians, and marine scientists that tracks the reality to inform the world about the impact of drilling on this rich ecosystem.
As zoologist and broadcaster David Attenborough said, "Saving the ocean is saving our world." The ocean supports human life by producing oxygen and storing heat to maintain the Earth's temperature.
This film asks: Should we really proceed with this plan that could destroy the rich and irreplaceable marine ecosystem?
Background of the Event
Following the screening, we will have a talk session with two guests: Ms. Ozawa from Tara Ocean Japan, who is involved in exploration activities to protect the ocean, and Ms. Mutsuki Kurobe, an Artivist from 8bit news, a news media where citizens are the main focus. We hope you will join us.
