Peru's conger eel fishery has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first in the country to receive the MSC fishery certification, a global standard for sustainable fishing. Since 2021, the fishery has implemented numerous improvements, including enhanced scientific monitoring, stricter catch limits, and the protection of critical habitats. Companies such as Perupez and Sakana del Peru worked closely with the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE) and the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) to establish a robust management system and ensure supply chain transparency. Cristian Vallejos, Program Director for MSC Latin America, stated that this historic achievement demonstrates how scientific evidence and collaboration can transform resource utilization, benefiting both the marine environment and local communities.
