What is the Okiori Event?

The folk event of the 'Okiori Event' will be held over two years, Reiwa 8 and 9, in preparation for the 63rd Shikinen Sengu in Reiwa 15. The Outer Shrine 'Land Pulling' was implemented from May to June this year. The Inner Shrine 'River Pulling' will be implemented from July to August. For the 63rd Shikinen Sengu Okiori, 72 delicacy teams within Ise City are scheduled to perform the delicacy, and each team is preparing for the upcoming main event.

The 'Okiori Event' is an event where materials for the construction of the shrine are offered and dedicated. This is one of the few opportunities for citizens to participate in the events for Shikinen Sengu, and as a folk event, it has a unique tradition that has been passed down, making it the most lively event in Ise.

Each delicacy team, before the event begins, visits shrines such as Futami Okitama Shrine as 'Hama Sankei.' This has the meaning of 'misogi,' or purifying oneself before offering materials to the gods, and they pray for the safety of the delicacy event. March to April, just before the main pulling, is the peak season for 'Hama Sankei,' and the streets of Futami are bustling with delicacy teams in various happi coats.

*Note: Only the delicacy by local delicacy teams will be implemented in the River Pulling delicacy. There is no delicacy by special shrine citizens.
