Itochu Cable Systems Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director and President: Takehisa Takada, hereinafter 'Itochu Cable Systems') has supplied the millimeter-wave wireless machine 'IP-50E' manufactured by Ceragon Networks (hereinafter 'Ceragon') to I-CAN Co., Ltd. (Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Representative Director and President: Hirotaka Matsumori, hereinafter 'I-CAN').

This project is part of the efforts to advance the information and communication infrastructure in Suo-Oshima Town, Oshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and has achieved high-speed communication exceeding an average of 9.2Gbps in actual measurement.

Background and Problem Solving

For cable TV operators, the construction of communication infrastructure or the increase in capacity in areas where the laying of optical fiber cables is physically difficult, such as remote islands and mountainous areas, is a major challenge involving significant costs and construction periods.

This time, in the approximately 3.41km sea area between Kamiura and Ushijima in Suo-Oshima Town, Oshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is under the jurisdiction of I-CAN, it was urgent to upgrade the communication speed and quality from the existing wireless system.

Overwhelming Results from System Introduction

This time, Itochu Cable Systems proposed and supplied the millimeter-wave wireless machine 'IP-50E' manufactured by Ceragon as a long-distance wireless communication solution. In the performance measurement after installation (execution speed measurement using a traffic generator), both System A and System B recorded an average of approximately 9.2Gbps (9,256Mbps to 9,263Mbps) in both uplink and downlink, which is extremely high effective throughput comparable to optical lines. This has demonstrated that a stable ultra-high-speed communication network can be constructed even in a long-distance area of approximately 3.41km across the sea.

Features of Ceragon's 'IP-50E' Solution

1. Application to Areas Where Optical Cable Laying is Difficult

Wireless connection of backbone lines is possible in areas where physical wiring is difficult, such as across the sea, rivers, and mountainous areas.

2. Significant Upgrade from Existing Systems

Achieves large-capacity communication of approximately 10Gbps (transmission distance of about 3km) in actual measurement, significantly improving the speed and quality of existing communication infrastructure.

3. Construction in a Short Period and at Low Cost

Compared to optical fiber laying work, the construction period is significantly shortened, and a large-capacity communication environment comparable to optical lines can be constructed while suppressing introduction costs.

Social Significance: Contribution to Eliminating Communication Disparities Between Regions

This case is a groundbreaking model case that solves communication issues in areas where optical fiber laying is difficult. Itochu Cable Systems will continue to propose this solution to cable TV stations nationwide as a means of replacing optical lines and expanding backbones, and will work to promote the infrastructure development and digitalization of local communities.

About I-CAN

I-CAN is a cable TV station that serves Yamaguchi City, Waki Town, and Suo-Oshima Town in Yamaguchi Prefecture. In addition to providing high-speed internet and multi-channel broadcasting, we deliver local news, events, and disaster evacuation information as quickly as possible through our own programs that are closely tied to the region. Beyond just a broadcasting and communication company, we play a role as a 'bridge of information' that connects the lives of the people in the region conveniently and abundantly with the power of digital technology.
