[Okayama University] Hosting the Misasa International Symposium "MISASA-IX" - Promoting the Frontier of Mars Science and Industry-Academia-Government Exchange -

Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama; President: Tomonari Nasu), through its Institute for Planetary Materials, a member of the Institute of Advanced Research, held the international symposium '2026 MISASA IX: Understanding the Martian System Through Biosignatures, Surface Processes, and Internal Dynamics' on February 26 and 27, 2026, at Hotel St. Palace Kurayoshi in Tottori Prefecture. A total of 73 people, including 15 graduate students from Japan and abroad, participated. The symposium was organized by the Institute for Planetary Materials and co-hosted by J-PEAKS, with planning support from three institutes within the Institute of Advanced Research (Institute for Planetary Materials, Institute of Plant Science and Resources, and Institute of Interdisciplinary Science). The event aimed to discuss the latest trends in Mars science, future research challenges, and Japan's future Mars exploration plans, while highlighting how the institute's research facilities—particularly the 'Planetary Surface Environment Simulator' introduced last year—can contribute to the field. At the beginning of the first day, President Tomonari Nasu delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of Mars exploration research and the university's role. He touched upon the university's Long-term Vision 2050, the strengthening of research systems under J-PEAKS, the expansion of hub functions for industry-academia-government and international joint research, and the significance of the lab tour scheduled for the following day. The symposium featured active discussions based on cutting-edge research regarding the 'Martian life environment.' In addition to lectures, poster sessions, and lab tours, the event included participation from local companies, space industry firms, and Tottori Prefecture, serving as a meaningful venue for researchers, students, businesses, and local governments to gather. During the banquet on the first day, Mayor Matsuura of Misasa Town attended, further deepening the exchange. This symposium is expected to facilitate the building of relationships with companies both inside and outside Tottori Prefecture and the space industry, leading to future joint research and the acquisition of space strategy funds.
