The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) annually honors researchers who have achieved remarkable results in research and development related to science and technology. This year, Professor Michihiro Suga and Assistant Professor Yoshiki Nakajima of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology at Okayama University received the 'Science and Technology Prize (Research Category).' Additionally, Associate Professor Takayuki Ishii of the Institute for Planetary Materials received the 'Young Scientists' Prize.' The award ceremony was held at MEXT on April 15, 2026. The Science and Technology Prize is awarded to researchers who have conducted original research that contributes to the development of science and technology in Japan. Professor Suga's research on 'water splitting reactions in photosynthesis using X-ray free-electron lasers' was highly evaluated for its contribution to the rational design of artificial photosynthesis catalysts. The Young Scientists' Prize is awarded to young researchers who demonstrate high originality. Associate Professor Ishii's research on 'Earth's internal structure and material circulation through high-pressure experiments' was recognized for providing insights beyond conventional frameworks in mantle mineralogy and planetary material science. Okayama University, selected for the J-PEAKS program in December 2023, continues to accelerate support for outstanding researchers to deliver cutting-edge results to society.
