Overview

The General Technical Department of Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City; President: Tomohiro Nasu), under the Technical Supervision Headquarters, held the first 'Medical Engineering Seminar' as part of the advanced curriculum (mandatory) of the TC College Medical Engineering Course at the Shikata Campus in a hybrid format. Moderated by Masahiro Narasaki, the course manager, three second-year students from the TM program, including those from outside the university, gave presentations.

At the beginning, Masahito Sato, Vice Director (Research/Industry-Academia Co-creation) and Vice President (Academic Affairs) of the university, who serves as the medical engineering course supervisor and General Technical Department Manager, stated: 'The TC College Medical Engineering Course is implemented in collaboration with related institutions nationwide, not just our university, aiming to improve technical staff skills and enhance research/educational capabilities. We believe this contributes to the development of the entire organization. Additionally, we have introduced a system to bestow the title of 'Honorary Technical Supervisor' on high-performing staff, a first in Japan. I look forward to participants enhancing their expertise through this course and becoming technical staff who support research and education.'

First, Miki Inigami, a technical expert from the Medical Technical Division, presented on 'Work Introduction in Forensic Science (Especially DNA Testing-related).' She introduced research methods and improvements for DNA testing based on practical experience.

Second, Yoshihiko Hagiwara, a technical expert from the Life Science Division of the Gunma University Technical Institute, presented online on 'Management of Shared Equipment and Research Support Initiatives in Core Facility Creation.' He shared examples of support and problem-solving with managed shared equipment and achievements linked to technical skills acquired through research support.

Third, Masahiro Fujii, a technical expert from the Equipment Analysis and Animal/Plant Resources Division of Okayama University, presented on 'Thinking About Equipment Maintenance.' He explained the evolution of the environment and facilities for animal experiments at the Shikata Campus, discussing past challenges and responses.

Following the presentations, participants engaged in a lively discussion covering topics from operational frameworks to specific procedural details, making it a meaningful seminar for all.

After comments from Manager Sato and others, Yoshihiko Tamura, Director of the General Technical Department, gave closing remarks: 'Touching on diverse perspectives from three different presentations provided an opportunity to rethink the role and future of technical staff. To support the research/educational foundation with limited personnel, it is important for everyone to act independently and share/inherit techniques and knowledge throughout the organization. I hope you leverage the insights and networks gained here to enhance technical skills and contribute to organizational development.'

Since FY2022, Okayama University has participated in 'TC College,' a talent development program for technical staff led by Tokyo Institute of Technology. Since FY2023, Okayama University has operated as a satellite school offering the 'Medical Engineering Course,' strategically promoting initiatives leveraging its strengths.

The Medical Engineering Seminar is scheduled to be held for the second time this fiscal year. The General Technical Department will continue to deepen collaboration among staff and promote skill improvement through diverse training programs, strengthening its role as a partner in Okayama University's research, education, and clinical activities.

Furthermore, the university is strategically promoting new value creation utilizing initiatives like the MEXT 'J-PEAKS' project to realize the 'Okayama University Long-term Vision 2050.' We invite you to continue to look forward to the constant change, challenges, and the activities of the technical staff supporting the research university that co-creates the future of the region and the planet.
