The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) has decided to support the development of Gaianixx, a startup from the University of Tokyo, under the 2025 A-STEP implementation program. Gaianixx is developing a proprietary 'pluripotent buffer layer' to achieve both high performance and low cost in piezoelectric devices. Conventional epitaxial growth often leads to crystal defects due to lattice mismatch between the substrate and the functional thin film; Gaianixx's technology resolves this issue. This project aims to establish mass production technology for single-crystal piezoelectric materials like PZT. The technology is also applicable to next-generation semiconductors, potentially contributing to significant improvements in energy efficiency.
