St. Marianna University School of Medicine Hospital (Kawasaki, Kanagawa; Hospital Director: Taketo Ohtsubo) has introduced 'medimo,' an AI clinical support tool developed by medimo Inc. (Minato, Tokyo; President: Yo Nakahara), a startup co-founded by one of the university's medical students.
This initiative realizes a vision shared by both the medical students—driven by the spirit of using AI to reduce burdens in healthcare—and the teaching hospital aiming to pioneer the next generation of medical environments. Through this system, they strive to significantly reduce the administrative workload on medical staff and achieve sustainable, patient-centered care.
'medimo' is a clinical documentation support tool that uses voice recognition to transcribe conversations during consultations and generative AI to create drafts and summaries of medical records. It assists in various clerical tasks such as creating SOAP-style medical charts, recording informed consent, and summarizing clinical findings for outpatient services.
Expected benefits include reduced time spent on EHR documentation, improved accuracy of patient records, prevention of oversight, and overall improvement of the outpatient process. Following initial validation in the Gastroenterology department, the hospital will cautiously consider expanding its application to other medical departments and diverse professions, including rehabilitation, radiology, and emergency care.
