What is "Concorso d’Eleganza"?

A concours d'elegance is an exhibition of automotive design held in France and Italy in the 1920s. At that time, it was a show where wealthy individuals and aristocrats competed, featuring custom-designed cars, women's fashion, and rare, selectively bred dogs as a unified presentation. Currently, it is a competition for classic cars, evaluated based on criteria such as how well original condition and high-quality maintenance are preserved, and how rare the car is.

New Area Unveiled! Secret Garden <Paid Area: Indoors>

Image for illustration purposes.

The normally inaccessible interior of Toyokawa Inari at night, named the "Secret Garden," offers five experiences: "Mukai," "INORI," "Garden of Light," "Teien," and "HUSUMAE," guiding visitors into a fantastical world.

Mukai (Zuisho-den 1F)

Yuki Nishimoto's large sliding door painting, "Toyokawa: New Bestiary," Scroll A, is brought to life as a moving picture scroll. Inheriting the playful spirit of the National Treasure "Choju-jinbutsu-giga" (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans), the creatures naturally frolic and begin to move. Blackness permeates, leaving only ink suspended in the air, hinting at the ink painting world to come.

Teien (Myogonji Garden)

A dragon appears on the surface of the pond. An immersive spectacle where video, lighting, and sound synchronize. The climax of the experience, the pinnacle of the journey. Yuki Nishimoto's dragon ink painting is projected onto the pond's surface and mist. The dragon appears on the water's surface with ripples, calls the rain, brings abundance to the garden, and returns to the water. A "moving ink wash" emerges, integrating video, light, and sound.

Corridor of Light (Tsutenro)

Bamboo lanterns line the Tsutenro at Toyokawa Inari at night. While indoors, you can overlook the illuminated grounds of Toyokawa Inari.

INORI (Hatto)

Inside the Hatto (main hall), illuminated in purple, the principal image welcomes visitors in a mystical, soft light.

HUSUMAE (Saisho-den)

A grand project to be preserved for 1000 years: "Toyokawa: New Bestiary," Scroll A. <https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000006.000153886.html>

Twelve large sliding door paintings emerge, specially illuminated in the Saisho-den.

Shino-ryu Kodo, 21st Head Master, Isshiken Sobi

Supervised and produced the scents for the "Secret Garden" area.

At the museum entrance, Zuisho-den 1F "Mukai," and Saisho-den "HUSUMAE," visitors will be welcomed with special scents blended by the Head Master himself. Please enjoy the rich spatial aromas that embody Japan's ancient traditions.

Profile

Son of the former 20th Head Master of Shino-ryu, Yuko-sai Sogen, who has inherited Kodo (incense ceremony) and the tea ceremony for 21 generations over 550 years since the Muromachi period. He honed his skills under his grandfather, the 19th Head Master Yuko-sai Sogen, and his father, from a young age. Simultaneously, he continued to play soccer, which he started in kindergarten, through university and in the adult league. At the age of 25, he faced death due to a brain tumor. After being discharged from the hospital, he practiced Zen under the guidance of the 530th Abbot of Daitoku-ji, Master Gyokudo Izumida. He spent one-on-one time with the Master and in 2004 received the Kengo (studio name) "Isshiken" and the Shomei (religious name) "Sobi" from Master Gyokudo Izumida, becoming the successor to the 21st Head Master. In March 2025, at the National Treasure "Tokyu-do" within Jisho-ji (Ginkaku-ji), the birthplace of Shino-ryu in Kyoto, he will offer the famous incense "Ka" to the wooden statue of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, marking the first Head Master succession in 38 years. Currently, as the Head Master for a new era, he teaches at dojos nationwide and overseas branches (Paris, Reims, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hong Kong), and gives lectures at kindergartens and universities. He strives to foster international exchange through Kodo, Japan's unique incense culture, and works in various locations with the desire to connect people and the world through culture. He is also engaged in afforestation activities in Vietnam to preserve rare incense woods for future generations, aiming for Kodo to be registered as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Asset. He also conducts research on how incense aromas can be utilized in early childhood education and in today's stressful society through "KODO LABO." He is also an Overseas Cultural Exchange Envoy for the Agency for Cultural Affairs, a director of the Japan Cultural Heritage Association, an honorary sommelier of the Japan Sommelier Association, and an honorary member of the French Society of Perfumers.
