The Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo (Matsuo Lab) has announced a collaboration with PKSHA Technology (PKSHA) and Anthropic, PBC (Anthropic) to construct the 'Japan AI Index,' a platform designed to continuously monitor and analyze the social impact of generative AI in Japan.
As Japan faces an accelerating decline in its working-age population, leveraging AI to boost productivity is essential to maintaining industrial competitiveness. To address this, the Japan AI Index serves as an advanced observation platform, combining the university's academic neutrality, statistical data on LLM usage from developers, and the industrial implementation expertise of practitioners.
There is an urgent need to objectively understand how AI influences work, employment, and industry, and to apply these insights to management and workforce development. While Anthropic has already released the 'Anthropic Economic Index' in the U.S., there has been no domestic platform in Japan that accounts for the country's unique industrial structure and employment practices. This new index will refine that knowledge according to Japanese industrial and employment statistics, establishing a unique national baseline.
Featuring the integration of two main data streams, the Japan AI Index merges academic, technical, and industrial perspectives into a single indicator:
1. Statistical data on LLM usage (including the Anthropic Economic Index) 2. Public statistics and survey data on Japan's economic activity, employment, and education.
By cross-referencing these, the team will continuously conduct and publish analyses on:
- Visualization of AI adoption progress across Japan's industrial sectors - Shifts in the division of tasks between AI and humans - Verification of the relationship between AI adoption and GDP, employment, and wages - Detection of productivity changes by industry and occupation - Insights into the talent and skills required in the AI era
Led by the University of Tokyo, findings will be published via an analysis dashboard and annual reports to support decision-making in corporate AI investment, organizational design, and educational curriculum development.
