Data Supporting the Development of Japan's Salmon Aquaculture Industry Released
Amidst stagnant growth in domestic fish aquaculture production, salmon is one of the few fish species experiencing expanding production. With low parasitic risk and strong demand for raw consumption, salmon enjoys stable popularity year-round, particularly among conveyor belt sushi restaurants and mass retailers. In recent years, in addition to production expansion by major companies, new entrants and investments in land-based aquaculture have followed, making salmon a driving force in Japan's aquaculture industry.
While domestic salmon and trout aquaculture is diversifying in terms of species and production methods, government statistics only capture production volumes by species for silver salmon (sea-based aquaculture) and rainbow trout (inland aquaculture).
Minato Shimbun conducted independent interviews with producers to gather information on species and production volumes by brand to the extent possible.
The daily fisheries industry newspaper "Minato Shimbun" utilized its nationwide reporter network to conduct independent interviews with producers. It investigated brand names, producers, production areas, species, production volumes, shipping periods, and aquaculture methods, and released the digital content "Japan's Expanding Salmon Aquaculture: Nationwide Production Map 2026" on note starting in July.
