In-depth Discussion on "Practical Approaches to Innovation in Industry"
Currently, various players challenging industrial creation, including companies, universities, research institutions, and startups, are pursuing new business ventures and open innovation. However, excellent technologies and research results do not automatically develop into new industries. A new industry is established only when technology is accepted by the market, spreads throughout society, and is sublimated into a mechanism that generates continuous value. The process involves numerous hurdles that cannot be overcome by general business development theories alone. Facing these hurdles is a common theme for all companies and individuals challenging innovation and new business ventures.
At this summit, leaders at the forefront of industrial creation will share not only the challenges and trial-and-error they have personally experienced but also "why they are undertaking these challenges," "what future they envision," and "what drives them to pursue industrial creation." By engaging with the underlying ideas and values behind their endeavors, the summit aims to provide participants with an opportunity to re-examine their own challenges and take the next step forward.

1. "How Can Technology Transcend 'Business' to Become an 'Industry'?"
The automotive industry, which is now the backbone of the Japanese economy, started from scratch, not even existing in the past. Was it a coincidence that, amidst overwhelming market share held by foreign companies and a complete lack of infrastructure, they overcame technological and financial barriers to build today's multi-trillion yen supply chain?
Although the environment supporting innovation was not at all established at that time, there must have been strong visions and fortunate circumstances, and we must not overlook the existence of innovators who persevered with high goals. In today's world where many innovative technologies are born and then buried, we are once again facing a great opportunity to establish industries.
This session will feature speakers from Mitsui Fudosan, which has built industrial creation mechanisms and ecosystems such as LINK-J, RISE-A, and crossU in Nihonbashi not only as a city developer but also as an "industrial developer"; Professor Shirasaka, who continuously bridges academia and business; and LIFESCAPES, which is challenging the creation of new industries in the life sciences domain. They will engage in discussions that transcend various boundaries, delving into the hurdles they have overcome and the real challenges they face today.
2. "Spin-outs/Carve-outs to Maximize Team Enthusiasm and Business Development Speed"
Japanese companies still hold many seeds of technology that could be competitive globally. However, many of these stagnate before growing into a business of significant scale due to the logic of existing businesses, organizational barriers, and slow decision-making processes. What Japan needs now is not to speak of pessimism, but concrete success stories of nurturing dormant technologies within companies into new growth businesses.
Spin-outs and carve-outs have often been discussed as management techniques used in business restructuring and divestitures. However, from the perspective of commercializing technology, they are not merely organizational reorganizations. They are also extremely practical innovation tools for enhancing team enthusiasm, accelerating decision-making, and rapidly advancing customer validation and business development.
In this session, we will explore practical methods for realizing the commercialization of technology with the founders of "MENOU," a spin-out created to commercialize a new business idea for visual inspection AI within Nikon Corporation, and "iFactory," established through a carve-out to accelerate the social implementation of R&D results from multiple large corporations.
This session offers practical knowledge for those involved in new business development, R&D, CVC, open innovation, and corporate planning within large corporations, enabling them to connect technology to social implementation.
3. "Where Does the Culture That Continuously Generates Business Originate?"
We have established training programs and processes. We have also created frameworks for CVC and engaged in open innovation. Yet, why do many initiatives for commercialization end at the "PoC" stage or with small sales figures? And why do they quickly lose momentum unless the secretariat constantly keeps the fire burning?
Many R&D-oriented companies, after a cycle of innovation activities, face a significant invisible barrier: while they may create a "box" of systems, they have not cultivated the "culture" that continuously transforms technology into business, meaning the behavior of someone taking action and trying again even after failure, without relying on formal systems. What are the essential fuel and power sources for an organization to "continuously generate innovation" without being satisfied with the passion of one individual or the commercialization of a single product? Is it the top management's vision or meticulous management strategy? A highly reproducible system? Or the inexhaustible passion of engineers and researchers?
This session will feature speakers from NEC, which has tackled cultural reform through thorough dialogue with management; Shimadzu Corporation, which continuously creates innovative products driven by the "passion" of its researchers; and JIN, which is implementing the international framework of the Innovation Management System (IMS) into organizational transformation.
Rather than superficial success formulas, the speakers will frankly discuss the "footprints" they have painstakingly accumulated and their "current positions." This session is an opportunity to re-evaluate the concrete winning strategies and difficulties involved in transforming your company into an "organization that continuously generates business."
