KI Corporation (Headquarters: Toki City, Gifu Prefecture), which develops the professional-grade product "ORIGAMI" born from the desire of baristas who constantly pursue the best cup, announces the third installment of the "with Makers Project," themed "ORIGAMI and Kisojikushi Lacquerware."

In collaboration with Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop in Kiso-Hirasawa, Nagano Prefecture, we have produced a dripper with beautiful stripes, a glass server showcasing exquisite lacquer craftsmanship, and a dripper holder.

About the with Makers Project

ORIGAMI is a brand born from the wishes of baristas.

With the slogan "with Barista," we develop products for brewing delicious coffee for all baristas who continue to pursue a better cup.

"with Makers" is a new challenge for us as a Mino ware manufacturer, aiming to convey the culture of Japanese craftsmanship through ORIGAMI products by collaborating across regions and industries.

We want our products to be cherished for a long time by sharing their production background and the stories of the makers.

We want more people to enjoy coffee.

This project was launched with these aspirations.

About Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop

https://maruyoshi-kosaka.jp/

Kiso-Hirasawa, a small town along the old Nakasendo road, surrounded by the deep forests of the Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture.

The history of Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop began in 1945.

The founder, Yoshio Kosaka, established the foundation of Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop by starting a business in lacquerware base coating and finishing, as a branch of the Kosaka family that had been in the lacquerware business for generations.

His son, Hito Kosaka, who had helped his father since childhood, further incorporated the highest level of finishing technique, Kuro-roiro (black mirror finish), and became a key player in a major production area as a craftsman of commercial lacquerware.

He then leveraged the end of the bubble economy in the early 1990s to pivot significantly towards in-house manufacturing and sales.

The third-generation owner, Reo Kosaka, inherited the business with woodworking skills, refining the history built by his predecessors and evolving the tradition of Kiso lacquerware through lacquer and woodworking in a contemporary context.

with Makers ORIGAMI Dripper Drawn with Lacquer Craftsmanship with Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop

ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop Limited Collection A Special Lineup Adorned with Lacquer Handiwork

・ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka Dripper S ao / fuji

Each dripper is meticulously hand-painted with stripes using lacquer by artisans.

'ao' (blue-green) is a fresh blue-green color inspired by the lush green mountains of Kiso, while 'fuji' (wisteria) features a matte pink base with purple and pink lacquer, inspired by the gracefully blooming wisteria flowers.

A subtle gold line accentuates both colors.

While the impression of lacquerware might be dominated by black and vermilion, rich colors such as black, vermilion, blue, and pink can be expressed by adding minerals and pigments to raw lacquer.

Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop proposes new charms of lacquerware by combining diverse lacquers with unique coating techniques.

The colorful ORIGAMI drippers were completed through the delicate techniques of Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop.

・ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka Aroma Glass Server [Stripes] ao / fuji

The ORIGAMI Aroma Glass Server is also available in two colors, 'ao' and 'fuji,' to coordinate with the drippers.

The stripe thickness has been intentionally varied from the drippers.

Compared to the delicate lines of the dripper, the server features bold, sweeping lines, creating a playful design.

All are hand-painted by artisans, with subtle variations in the length and number of lines, ensuring each piece is unique.

The surprise of which design you receive is part of the enjoyment.

The colorful and pop color scheme makes the coffee brewing time more enjoyable and uplifting.

・ORIGAMI Dripper S [sabi]

For this collaboration, ORIGAMI's manufacturing factory, "Koyo Toki," developed a color inspired by "sabitsuchi" (iron-rich clay) used as a base for Kiso lacquerware.

Based on the soft cream color of sabitsuchi, a glaze reminiscent of clear lacquer (suk urushi) is applied. Iron powder mixed into the base creates the warmth of the earth, while the natural luster unique to ceramics adds a quiet expression that evokes the Japanese aesthetic of "wabi-sabi."

・ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka Dripper Holder Sakura Black Urushi

In Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, at Hayakawa Woodworking Shop, a dripper holder is carefully finished one by one using cherry wood, and then hand-painted with black lacquer by Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop.

The density of the black lacquer varies depending on the wood grain, with the wood color subtly showing through the black lacquer.

The holder, made from cherry wood, has a pleasant texture and fits comfortably in the hand.

Black lacquer gains luster and a deep sheen with use, and the wood grain emerges through scratches and scuffs, allowing the tool to be personalized through use.

It is a simple yet elegant holder that embodies the quality of meticulous Japanese craftsmanship.

・ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka Aroma Glass Server Clear Urushi

Clear lacquer (suk urushi) has been applied to the Aroma Glass Server.

Clear lacquer is purified raw lacquer, resulting in a transparent, amber-colored lacquer.

What makes lacquer unique compared to other materials is its aging process. While wooden and bamboo products deepen in color and develop a patina with use, lacquer gradually increases in transparency and lightens in color, influenced by environmental factors like light and humidity.

Clear lacquer allows you to fully enjoy the unique aging process of lacquer.

It is designed to create a gradient from transparent to deep brown as approximately one cup of coffee is brewed.

・Maruyoshi Kosaka obiwa Tray

To coincide with the launch of the ORIGAMI x Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop collaboration items, the "hyakushiki (Momoiro)" obiwa (sash) tray M from Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop's original brand will also be sold on the ORIGAMI online store.

The bentwood rim made of Kiso cypress has a soft touch, and the glass surface features overlapping band-like patterns applied with clear lacquer. It starts with a deep amber hue, but as it is exposed to sunlight, the transparency of the lacquer increases, and it gradually becomes lighter. The amber shadow cast when light passes through is also beautiful, making it a piece of everyday craft that can be enjoyed for its changing appearance with each use.

By combining the Dripper S [sabi], Dripper Holder [Sakura Black Urushi], and Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop's Obiwa Tray, a harmonious and beautiful coffee set is completed.

This collaboration, born from the encounter between ORIGAMI's unique style and Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware Shop's techniques.

We hope you will feel the charm of Japanese craftsmanship and the richness of handmade work along with your coffee enjoyment time.
