Household Management Service 'OneBank' Adds Speedy Identity Verification via IC Chip Scanning and Selfies

SmartBank Inc. has added a new identity verification method to its household management service, 'OneBank,' utilizing IC chip scanning of My Number cards and driver's licenses, along with selfie photos. This allows users who may not remember their electronic signature passwords or those who primarily use their driver's licenses to complete the identity verification process more quickly and securely.

Regarding the background of this implementation, the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds, aimed at preventing money laundering, requires financial institutions to strengthen online identity verification. Consequently, the traditional method of sending photos of identification documents will be abolished in April 2027 due to difficulties in detecting forged documents. In response, OneBank has proactively added IC chip scanning and selfie-based verification.

Once users meet the screening criteria, they can complete the verification process quickly, enabling them to issue virtual cards and use 'pay-later' services. OneBank has previously introduced app-based verification to provide a safe and swift experience. In March 2025, it introduced the Public Personal Authentication Service (JPKI) using smartphone-based My Number card scanning. This latest update adds support for driver's licenses.

To use the feature, users select their document in the app, enter the required PIN, scan the IC chip via NFC, and take a selfie for instant review. Completing identity verification unlocks benefits such as increased deposit methods, higher deposit and payment limits, withdrawal capabilities, removal of payment limits within the card's validity period, the ability to hold multiple cards, and full balance refund guarantees.

The system utilizes the 'iTrust Identity Verification Service' provided by Cybertrust Japan Co., Ltd. This cloud service enables the digital completion of identity verification tasks, improving efficiency and reducing costs. OneBank continues to update its features to enhance security and convenience.
