About the Film 'Zico: The Samurai of Kinkinho'
Directed by João Wainer, this documentary portrays the life and career of football legend Zico (Arthur Antunes Coimbra), using previously unreleased personal archives and testimonies from family members and prominent figures.
<Highlights of the Film>
The film focuses on Zico the man, exploring his deep connection with Japan and the 'samurai' spirit. The title 'Samurai' reflects how Zico’s decisiveness, humility, and discipline resonate with Japanese culture.
It deeply examines the challenges he faced when joining Sumitomo Metals (now Kashima Antlers) in 1991, a time when football had little tradition in Japan, as well as his monumental contributions to laying the foundation of Japanese football.
Additionally, rare private footage from Zico’s personal archives—including Super 8 and VHS tapes he preserved for decades—has been digitized and will be unveiled for the first time. Historic items such as the No. 10 jersey he wore in the 1981 Toyota Cup final will also be featured.
Throughout his career, Zico has emphasized values such as 'collective unity' and 'respect for others,' and he also discusses the importance of preserving football history and passing on memories in Brazil.
<Comments from Zico and the Director>
Zico: 'This film is not about me as a football player, but about my journey as a person. Involving my family has made the emotions richer. I sincerely hope my beloved Japanese fans can experience a part of my life on the big screen.'
Director João Wainer: 'Zico’s greatest legacy lies beyond goals and victories. His respect for others and relentless pursuit of victory offer valuable lessons for people in any profession.'
