The exhibition '(UN)KNOWN HIROKO KOSHINO - New Theories / True Accounts of Hiroko Koshino,' currently on display at the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art until July 26, 2026, will host a related event titled 'Inherited Aesthetics: A Dialogue on Costume, Design, and Traditional Culture' on Saturday, June 27.

The event will feature fashion designer Hiroko Koshino and costume designer Kumiko Ogawa, known for her work on films and dramas. Together, they will explore the essence of Japanese aesthetics through discussions on attire, color, bodily expression, and the transmission of traditional culture into the modern era.

The Inheritance of Era and Aesthetic Through Costume and Design

Costume is not merely about outward appearance; it is a vital form of expression that visualizes character, the spirit of an era, and cultural memory. In this talk, Hiroko Koshino will share practical insights gained from 65 years of creative practice on how she has reinterpreted Japan's traditional culture in contemporary design. Kumiko Ogawa will contribute her perspective on character creation through costume in filmmaking, engaging in a passionate discussion on the meaning and expressive power of dress.

This event offers attendees a valuable opportunity to reconsider fundamental questions such as 'What is aesthetic consciousness?' and 'What does it mean to inherit culture?'
