Press Release Information Title: Commencement of Joint Research (Clinical Research Phase) with University of Tsukuba and Tokyo Institute of Science
In April 2026, Plus Medi Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Mikihiro Nagata, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) announced the commencement of joint clinical research with the National University Corporation University of Tsukuba (President: Kyosuke Nagata, Location: Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture) and the National University Corporation Tokyo Institute of Science (President: Naoto Otake, Location: Meguro-ku, Tokyo) regarding the clinical utility and social implementation of "FAROme," a disease management app for ulcerative colitis patients.
The purpose of this research is to continuously acquire and visualize symptom and physical condition data of ulcerative colitis patients in their daily lives, to understand disease activity, predict recurrence, and further contribute to improving the quality of life (QOL) of these patients. Following previous verification phases, this clinical research is now being conducted to evaluate its utility in actual clinical practice.
"FAROme" is an application that enables patients to input daily data and medical professionals to conduct remote monitoring. In this research, the following data will be collected and utilized from ulcerative colitis patients attending the University of Tsukuba Hospital and related medical institutions:
- Disease-specific symptom indicators such as bowel movements, abdominal pain, and bloody stools - Vital data such as body temperature and weight - Information on medication status and lifestyle habits - Subjective symptom evaluation based on Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO)
This data will be accumulated chronologically, allowing doctors to continuously monitor changes in patients' conditions through a dedicated management screen. Furthermore, an alert function will support early intervention if changes exceeding certain thresholds are detected.
This research is expected to enable the visualization of daily symptom fluctuations, which were previously difficult to grasp in conventional outpatient care, and bring about the following clinical significance:
- More precise evaluation of disease activity - Early detection of recurrence and prevention of severe cases - Consideration of optimized treatment interventions for individual patients
From the patient's perspective, recording and visualizing daily symptoms is expected to improve self-management capabilities and contribute to better information sharing with medical professionals.
Moving forward, based on the data and insights gained from this research, we will advance the functional sophistication of "FAROme" and promote the social implementation of digital health utilization in the field of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
