Wakutori Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Naoya Sugimura; hereinafter 'Wakutori') has conducted a survey titled 'Realities of Saving and Earning in Resort Jobs' targeting 185 resort job veterans, primarily registered users of its resort job listing site 'Wakutori (WORKTRIP)'.
In recent years, resort jobs have gained popularity for enabling savings while enjoying scenic destinations. This survey presents real insights from staff who have worked on-site, including their 'highest monthly savings' and 'tips for efficient earning'.
Respondents consisted of 76.2% women and 22.7% men. The largest age group was in their 30s (27.0%), with responses collected from a wide range of ages, from teens to those in their 60s.
Survey Highlights
Approximately 70% (69.7%) of resort job workers successfully saved over ¥100,000 in one month!
Furthermore, 28.1% of respondents saved over ¥200,000 in a single month.
Top prefectures for highest savings: 1st - Hokkaido, 2nd - Nagano Prefecture
Key savings tips: Utilizing 'free meals and accommodation' and creating an environment that minimizes spending
Detailed Survey Results
① How much can you save in one month? About 70% saved over ¥100,000, and 1 in 4 saved over ¥200,000!
When asked about the 'highest amount saved in a single month during a resort job', the most common response was '¥100,000 to less than ¥150,000' (28.6%). This was followed by '¥150,000 to less than ¥200,000' (13.0%), '¥200,000 to less than ¥250,000' (14.6%), and '¥250,000 to less than ¥300,000' (11.4%). Overall, 69.7% of respondents succeeded in saving over ¥100,000 in a single month. Some even reported saving over ¥350,000 in one month, highlighting the potential of resort jobs to rapidly accumulate assets in a short period.
② Ranking of prefectures where the most savings were achieved! Winter destinations dominate the top two spots
The survey on 'prefectures where respondents earned the highest savings' showed that large-scale resort areas and ski resorts dominated the rankings.
1st: Hokkaido (27 people)
2nd: Nagano Prefecture (26 people)
3rd: Kanagawa Prefecture (20 people)
Hokkaido and Nagano not only offer abundant seasonal live-in job opportunities, but their surrounding areas also have fewer entertainment facilities that encourage spending—creating an environment that naturally accelerates savings.
③ Tips for efficient saving: Leverage 'free meals' and 'low-spending environments'
In open-ended responses about 'strategies for efficient saving and earning', many participants shared common life hacks.
'Always choose workplaces that offer free meals, accommodation, and utilities. Just saving on food costs allows money to accumulate effortlessly.' (Male, 20s)
'By choosing a moderately rural location where I can't easily go shopping on days off, I forcibly prevented unnecessary spending.' (Female, 30s)
'I scheduled as many shifts as possible during peak seasons like New Year and Golden Week, when hourly wages are higher.' (Female, 20s)
Maximizing the unique advantage of resort jobs—where living expenses (rent and food) are nearly zero—is the key to achieving exceptional savings.
④ How is the saved money used? 'Supplementing daily expenses' alongside 'overseas study and working holidays' rank high
Main uses of saved money (multiple selections allowed) included 'daily living expenses' as well as 'travel and overseas trip funds' and 'savings for the future'. Additionally, 16 respondents reported using resort jobs specifically to fund 'working holidays or studying abroad'—a growing trend. This indicates that resort jobs are strongly serving as a 'stepping stone for funding international experiences'.
Overall Assessment: Resort jobs as a powerful step toward 'self-investment and funding dreams'
This survey reveals that resort jobs have evolved beyond mere 'part-time work at resort destinations'. They have become an established 'smart lifestyle' that allows individuals to minimize fixed costs such as rent and food, and efficiently build assets in a short period.
Notably, there is a strong trend of using funds saved through resort jobs not just for daily living expenses, but proactively for future career steps and self-investment, such as 'overseas study and working holidays' and 'travel'. Wakutori will continue to provide diverse job listings and comprehensive support to help job seekers take confident next steps through resort employment.
