Idex Auto Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Fukuoka, President and CEO: Shinichiro Yamaura), a subsidiary of Shindeitsu Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Fukuoka, President and Group CEO: Yasunori Idemitsu), will sequentially launch "Budget Subsc Car Share," a joint-use subscription service, the first of its kind in Japan*, as a new mobility service from Budget Rent a Car, starting July 9, 2026.

This service is an unprecedented new car-sharing model where a small group of members (approximately 15 people) jointly use one car per station. Users can register their own "My Station" and use the service as many times as they wish for a fixed monthly fee, offering a mobility infrastructure optimized for the future that combines the ease of traditional car sharing with the peace of mind of owning a private car.

Budget Subsc Car Share

Four Features of "Budget Subsc Car Share"

1. Unlimited Rides for a Monthly Fee

Members can use the vehicles at each station as many times as they wish within the designated time by paying a monthly fee. The biggest feature is that it can be used like a private car, despite being a car-sharing service. (Only distance charges equivalent to the actual gasoline cost will apply.)

2. "One Car Jointly Used by the Local Community"

Each station will have approximately 15 members (registration on a first-come, first-served basis). Since the vehicle is shared only among a limited number of local members, not the general public, it provides a safe and secure new means of transportation that is close to a private experience for those who do not own a car.

3. Introduction of a "User-to-User Evaluation System" (Patent No. 7749873)

We have developed a system where users mutually evaluate the condition of the previous user (fuel status, interior cleanliness) via an app when using car sharing. By positively utilizing the psychological effect (peer pressure) within the joint-use community, we ensure consistently high vehicle quality.

4. Cheaper Than "Ownership," Freer Than "Traditional Car Sharing"

This is a new mobility option that allows you to use a car freely when needed, while reducing the costs associated with owning a private car, such as parking, insurance, vehicle inspections, and taxes. It offers a new car lifestyle that is neither car ownership nor traditional car sharing.

Background of Service Development

1. Macroeconomic Environment: Rising automobile maintenance costs and a shift from "ownership to usage"

The recent rapid rise in prices and intermittent surges in gasoline prices (fuel costs) have significantly increased the burden of automobile maintenance costs (parking, inspections, taxes, insurance, etc.) on general consumers' household budgets. Consequently, there has been a rapid structural shift towards a lifestyle of "using" cars only when needed, especially among young people and families in urban areas, to avoid the risks of "owning" a private car.

2. Diversification of Mobility Needs: Proliferation of next-generation mobility

In recent years, with the expansion of car-sharing use, particularly among young people, and the shift in values from ownership to usage, mobility needs have become more diverse. Furthermore, with the spread of MaaS and next-generation mobility, users have come to seek the need to "use conveniently and affordably only when needed." Based on these changes in the market environment, we have developed a new business model, "Budget Subsc Car Share," which involves joint use of specific stations on a monthly subscription basis, differing from traditional rental cars and hourly car sharing, aiming to provide a new, locally rooted mobility service.

3. Idex Group's Aim: Establishing the "Third Mobility Infrastructure" to Solve Both Parties' Challenges

The Idex Group, celebrating its 100th anniversary, and Idex Auto Japan, which operates Budget Rent a Car, have focused on these challenges. To resolve both the "high cost" of individual car ownership and the "inconvenience and quality concerns" of traditional car sharing, we have developed Japan's only* "joint-use subscription model" where one vehicle is shared at a fixed rate within a community of familiar faces (approximately 15 people). While thoroughly reducing the burden of parking fees, taxes, etc., we propose a sustainable mobility option (third infrastructure) optimized for the future, where users can freely use the car as if it were their own private vehicle, always clean and available without limits.
