[Lecture Overview]

Maritime shipping serves as a societal foundation, transporting approximately 80% of global and over 99% of Japan's cargo, supporting daily life and economic activity. Japan ranks third globally in both shipbuilding output and fleet capacity, positioning itself as a leading maritime nation.

Currently, there is a growing demand to develop and implement next-generation vessels and maritime systems that enhance safety and efficiency through automation and AI, while also achieving the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This lecture will examine the Shipbuilding Industry Revitalization Roadmap, published in December 2025, along with discussions from the Shipbuilding Working Group of Japan's Growth Strategy Council. It will explain what is essential for Japan to maintain its status as a maritime nation and achieve sustainable development in the shipbuilding industry, as well as how these elements should be strengthened and interconnected.
