[Lecture Overview]
By the end of 2024, the global number of electric vehicles (EVs) reached 58 million units. While market growth has slightly slowed in some regions, EV sales continue to expand, making the management of a massive volume of used EV lithium-ion batteries an unavoidable challenge.
This lecture will first clarify the structure, degradation mechanisms, and reuse concepts of automotive lithium-ion batteries, then comprehensively explain current and emerging recycling technologies such as pyrometallurgy (dry), hydrometallurgy (wet), and direct recycling.
It will also cover global and domestic trends in EV battery recycling, the significance of recovering critical minerals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt, and examine the profitability of recycling businesses and their importance for resource security.
Furthermore, the lecture will introduce the structural differences between conventional lithium-ion batteries (LiB) and solid-state batteries, recovery and regeneration of solid electrolytes, and design approaches for recyclable batteries. It will discuss the challenges and future outlook for the next-generation battery era.
The seminar will also explore the future potential of the EV battery recycling market and business opportunities in the solid-state battery era.
