Hansan Co., Ltd. (CEO: Eiji Sakai) continues to preserve Japan’s world-renowned traditional ukiyo-e art while pushing the boundaries of artistic expression through innovative techniques.

The company is proud to announce the second installment of its 'Evangelion Japonism' project, a collaboration that fuses Japanese tradition with the globally beloved 'Evangelion' series. Titled 'EVANGELION Fūjin Raijin-zu Byōbu,' five new artworks will be released starting July 17 (Friday) through Hansan’s official online store, 'Ukiyo-e Kōbō.'

A Creative Project Where Japanese Culture Meets Evangelion

— Evangelion Japonism

'Evangelion Japonism' is a project that collaborates Japan’s traditional arts, crafts, and techniques with 'Evangelion'—a series cherished not only in Japan but around the world—to present a new form of Japanese culture for the modern era.

By reinterpreting 'Evangelion' through traditional Japanese media such as ukiyo-e, washi paper, woodblock printing, and folding screens, the project visualizes the franchise’s inherent 'mythology,' 'symbolism,' and 'spirituality' within a deeper cultural context.

The 'EVANGELION Fūjin Raijin-zu Byōbu' series represents the latest embodiment of this philosophy.

Reconstructing the National Treasure 'Fūjin Raijin-zu Byōbu'

— EVANGELION Fūjin Raijin-zu Byōbu Series

This series consists of five artworks reimagining the national treasure 'Fūjin Raijin-zu Byōbu' by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, overlaying the divine figures of Fūjin (Wind God) and Raijin (Thunder God) with Evangelion units.

The Evangelion units are rendered using Sōtatsu’s brushwork and sculptural sensibility, creating the illusion that Sōtatsu himself painted them. The characters floating within the scenes are depicted not realistically, but through expressive brushstrokes, symbolizing their inner depth and narrative significance, carefully positioned within the composition.

Five Beings, One New Mythology — Full Lineup

Raijin-zu: Unit-01 / Shinji Ikari

A reinterpretation of Raijin, symbolizing nature’s overwhelming threat, fused with Evangelion Unit-01, embodying both 'awe' and 'salvation.'

Shinji Ikari is portrayed with closed eyes, drifting in mid-air—a being tormented by a harsh fate, his sense of self occasionally wavering.

Fūjin-zu: Unit-00 / Rei Ayanami

Fūjin, who embodies the power to protect people, is reimagined with Unit-00, a unit that defends the world and fights alongside Unit-01.

Rei Ayanami is depicted standing resolutely despite inner emptiness, reaching toward a purpose she cannot yet fully grasp.

Fūjin-zu: Unit-02 / Asuka Langley Shikinami

A dynamic fusion of Fūjin’s vitality and protective strength with the power of Unit-02.

Asuka is portrayed as a symbol of decisive action and strong will, fearlessly charging into crises and missions.

Fūjin-zu: Unit-08 / Mari Makinami Illustrious

Fūjin’s protective power is merged with Unit-08 in this artwork.

Mari is depicted with a radiant smile, leaping into difficult situations with positivity and open-minded determination, expressed through a dynamic full-body pose.

Fūjin-zu: Mark.06 / Kaworu Nagisa

Fūjin, as a protector and guide, is reinterpreted with Mark.06.

Kaworu Nagisa is illustrated with a calm, serene smile, as if overlooking the world, his arms open wide to embrace everything.

Each artwork stands as an independent masterpiece, yet when placed side by side as folding screens, the characters’ gazes, hand directions, and spatial relationships create a dialogue and sense of connection, forming a two-panel, single-composition structure.

Furthermore, by placing figures or objects in front of the screens, viewers can expand the scene themselves, creating a uniquely three-dimensional Japanese display space unlike any before.

A new form of artistic expression emerges when a modern Japanese animation masterpiece meets the enduring spirit of Japanese art passed down for centuries. We invite you to witness the world that 'Evangelion Japonism' brings to life.
