Young and old, and children too! The "Hakata Gion Yamakasa," 15 days that stir the soul of Hakata residents, has begun.

"Hakata Gion Yamakasa" (hereinafter referred to as Yamakasa) is a representative festival of Hakata that has been passed down for over 780 years since the Kamakura period. It is a Shinto ritual to dedicate the Yamakasa to Kushida Shrine, the guardian deity of Hakata, and pray for good health, and it has been designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

At "hakatakara" in the product building of "Hakata Machiya" Furusato-kan on the main approach to Kushida Shrine, a full lineup of items perfect for commemorating your Yamakasa viewing or as souvenirs is available. If you're looking to buy Yamakasa souvenirs, Hakatakara is the place to focus on.

~What is Gion Manju?~

During the Yamakasa season, it is customary in Hakata households to eat Gion Manju to ward off evil and misfortune during the Yamakasa period.

This Gion Manju, adorned with the crest of the Gion Shrine of Kushida Shrine, the guardian deity of Hakata, is still loved by the people of Hakata as an auspicious confection essential for Yamakasa and as a summer solstice manju to ward off the heat.

The plump "Gion Manju," made with a dough that brings out a subtle hint of sake and filled with a moderately sweet koshian (strained bean paste), is a limited-edition product during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa period.

<Hakata Gion Yamakasa Deco Choco>

These feature kirie (paper cut) designs of the Yamakasa men, created by the late kirie artist Kazuyoshi Konishi.

There are 42 types in total, including the backs of the happi coats of the "Shichinagare" (seven streams) – Kuro-ryu, Higashi-ryu, Nakasu-ryu, Nishi-ryu, Chiyo-ryu, Ebisu-ryu, and Doi-ryu – as well as the crest of the Gion Shrine of Kushida Shrine!

You can collect your favorite stream (nagare) or aim to complete the entire set. There are various ways to enjoy them.

These are hakatakara exclusive items!

<Tenugui (hand towel) and Sensu (folding fan)>

Tenugui and sensu designed by the late graphic designer and children's author Isao Nishijima, who loved Hakata more than anyone.

His works, drawn with a familiar and gentle touch, can also be seen in the symbol marks of Fukuoka City Subway stations and instant noodle packaging.

<Nagare (stream) Wooden Tags>

The essential wooden tags for Yamakasa have been made into cute straps.

A perfect souvenir that can be casually used in everyday life.

These wooden tags are arranged in the order of appearance of the Yamakasa for this year's Oiyama-kasa.

Hakata residents remember them this way.

From the right: Naka (Nakasu-ryu) - Nishi (Nishi-ryu) - Chi (Chiyo-ryu) - E (Ebisu-ryu) - Chan - Do (Doi-ryu) - Dai (Daikoku-ryu) - Ha - Higashi (Higashi-ryu)

Naka Nishi Chi E Chan Do Dai Ha Higashi... Can you remember it?

~What is a Yamakasa Wooden Tag?~

A wooden tag awarded when taking on a role or duty in Yamakasa or other events.

The tag is inscribed with "No. X Yamakasa," "X-ryu," or "position name," and serves as a charm or proof of identity.

It is a traditional custom in Hakata to display this wooden tag at the entrance of one's home or on the family altar during and after the festival.
