Gakken Inc. launched three e-comics, 'Digital Knight Quest,' 'Umako and Moriya,' and 'Mendako Mentan: Yabai! Deep Sea Monsters,' on May 31, 2026.

These titles are carefully designed, from story and characters to visuals, to ensure children are drawn to them and naturally deepen their knowledge as they enjoy the narrative. They are a new kind of 'entertainment x learning' manga, where knowledge is acquired through the story and its characters, rather than by simply cramming information.

The three simultaneously released titles each focus on a different genre.

- 'Digital Knight Quest' (by Nikukyu Tanukawa) A boy who wanders into the world inside a smartphone becomes a 'Digital Knight' to protect people from online troubles. Readers can enjoyably learn about internet dangers, rules, and net literacy while following the story.

- 'Umako and Moriya' (by Suzume Cup) Set against the backdrop of the introduction of Buddhism in the Kofun period, the story depicts the encounter between the young Soga no Umako and Mononobe no Moriya. The plot, which imagines the beginning of a major historical shift, allows readers to naturally understand the flow and context of Japanese history.

- 'Mendako Mentan: Yabai! Deep Sea Monsters' (by Tatsuro Fukuoka) An educational manga where Mentan, a flapjack octopus, humorously comments on other bizarre deep-sea creatures. It is a work where readers can laugh and learn about the charms of the deep sea with Mentan.

In addition to their themes, these works ensure readability for children through features like full furigana (phonetic readings for all kanji) and carefully planned panel layouts.
