Circloop Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Shuta Nakamura), a provider of reusable container sharing services, has published a Carbon Footprint (CFP) calculation report visualizing the total lifecycle CO₂ emissions of its reusable cup service.
Purpose of the Calculation
Circloop operates under the concept of "disposable convenience without disposal," offering a reusable container sharing service called "Circloop" to reduce single-use containers and promote resource circulation. The company believes that to expand this initiative to more businesses, facilities, and users, it is essential to quantitatively demonstrate greenhouse gas emissions alongside qualitative benefits.
This calculation aims to assess the total lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of Circloop’s reusable cup service, objectively visualizing the environmental value of the service. It quantifies the emission reduction achieved by shifting from disposable to reusable systems and clarifies the environmental performance of the service. Furthermore, the analysis identifies operational improvements and challenges for service expansion, contributing to the development of a more effective circular model.
Calculation Overview
Target Products
Circloop Reusable Cups (300ml, 450ml)
Scope and Conditions
Scope: Raw material procurement → Manufacturing → Transportation → Washing → Disposal
Unit: Per single item
Reference Standards: Carbon Footprint Guidelines (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of the Environment), ISO14067:2018
Calculation Results (per 300ml cup, in g-CO₂)
Total lifecycle: 13.30
Raw material procurement: 1.38 (10%)
Manufacturing: 3.66 (28%)
Transportation: 0.44 (3%)
Washing: 7.72 (58%)
Disposal: 0.09 (1%)
Key Findings
The results show that the "washing" phase contributes the largest share of emissions.
Although transportation to customer sites occurs repeatedly, it accounts for less than 5% of total emissions, suggesting that efficient logistics can further reduce emissions.
Moving forward, Circloop will continue to improve operations based on these findings, promote the adoption of reusable systems across more businesses and facilities by visualizing environmental value, and work toward realizing a society free of disposable containers.
