Through a preservation and utilization project jointly promoted by Daiyu Co., Ltd. and Mikawaya, the historic liquor store 'Mikawaya' made a fresh start on May 30, 2026. Mikawaya is a representative local establishment that has supported Kamakura's development by supplying sake to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and Kencho-ji. The current building was constructed in 1927 and is designated as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property and a Kamakura City Landscape Important Building. Despite strict regulations due to the fire-prevention zone along Wakamiya Oji, a public-private-academic collaboration project was launched in 2018. After eight years of deliberation, it achieved the nation's first 'Building Standards Act exemption for a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property that is a wooden building within a fire-prevention zone.' The reopened liquor store utilizes the site of a former large refrigerator to sell carefully selected sake. Additionally, 'Kamakura Mikawaya Honten,' a restaurant that can also host weddings, opened on May 7, ensuring the historic architecture is passed on to the future.
