ecbeing Inc. (ecbeing, Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masaya Hayashi, hereinafter "our company"), provider of the EC site construction platform "ecbeing," conducted a survey on the actual usage of recommendation features on EC sites targeting 200 men and women who shop on EC sites at least once a month and have seen recommendation features in the past.

The survey revealed that 86% of respondents have purchased products prompted by recommendations, with 55.5% feeling that recommendations are helpful when they are "unsure what to buy," indicating that recommendation features play a significant role in purchasing decisions. On the other hand, approximately half of users feel dissatisfaction or a decrease in trust due to irrelevant recommendations, highlighting the risk that accuracy directly impacts site evaluation. Furthermore, the most anticipated future development was "integration with sales and special offers" at 59%, underscoring the need for a combination with price appeals beyond just improved accuracy.

The accuracy and design of recommendation features on EC sites directly influence conversion rates, site trust, and continued usage intent. In fact, 40.5% of respondents reported having felt a desire to continue using an EC site longer after seeing a recommendation, demonstrating that recommendations are a crucial touchpoint for retention, as shown by this survey. Our company, through "emoreco," a recommendation feature for EC sites provided by our group company visumo, offers highly accurate personalized recommendations utilizing customer behavior and review data, supporting the improvement of EC site sales and LTV.

Survey Results (Partial Excerpt)

1. 84.5% Viewed Recommendations in the Past Year

Q. In the past year, have you seen recommendation features such as "Recommended for You" on EC sites?

(Single response, N=200) *This question asked about viewing frequency in the past year.

The proportion of respondents who answered that they had seen EC site recommendation features in the past year reached 84.5% ("Often see" 29.5% + "Sometimes see" 55%). Only 6% answered "Have not seen," confirming that recommendation features are encountered by a large number of EC site users even within the past year.

It is considered that recommendation features have become a common function that many users encounter in their daily EC usage.

2. 86% Report Purchasing Experience Triggered by Recommendations

Q. Have you ever purchased a product prompted by a recommended item? (Single response, N=200)

The proportion of respondents who answered "Have purchased a product prompted by a recommended item" reached 86% ("Often" 10% + "Sometimes" 46% + "Rarely" 30%). Only 14% answered "No," suggesting that recommendation features function broadly as an effective touchpoint for purchase conversion.

3. Recommendations are Most Helpful When "Unsure What to Buy"

Q. In what situations do you find recommendations helpful? (Multiple responses, N=200)

The most common situation where recommendations were found helpful was when "unsure what to buy," with 55.5%. This was followed by "when wanting to know about new products/trends" at 33.5% and "when choosing a gift" at 25.5%. This indicates high expectations for recommendations as a function that supports the decision-making of consumers who have purchase intent but have not yet decided what to choose.

4. Approximately Half Express Dissatisfaction/Distrust with Irrelevant Recommendations

Q. When you feel a recommendation is "off the mark," how does your impression of the site change? (Single response, N=200)

When asked about the impact on site impression when recommendations were felt to be "off the mark," 51% answered "Don't particularly mind," while 33.5% felt "Slightly dissatisfied" and 15.5% felt "Trust decreases," totaling approximately 49% who experienced a negative change in impression. A decrease in recommendation accuracy is not merely a functional issue but a risk factor that affects the overall trust in the site.

5. "Integration with Special Offers" is the Most Anticipated Future Development (59%)

Q. What are your expectations for future recommendation features? (Multiple selections possible, N=200)

Regarding future expectations for recommendation features (multiple selections possible), "Integration with sales and special offers" was the most frequent at 59%. This was followed by "Improved accuracy to better match preferences" at 50.5%, "Non-intrusive display methods" at 34%, and "Suggestions utilizing past purchase history" at 29.5%. While expectations for personalized accuracy are high, the fact that the desire for a combination with price benefits exceeded this indicates that for consumers, the criterion for a "useful" recommendation is not only matching preferences but also offering good value. An approach that combines accuracy improvement with price appeals in recommendation design may lead to actual purchases.
