Rank Quest (https://rank-quest.jp/column/column/how-to-seo/), an SEO support company, analyzed the click-through rates (CTR) by search ranking in the dental industry based on its own data from May 2026. The company also compared this with the CTR by ranking in the SEO industry to identify trends unique to the dental sector.

In this survey, the CTR for the 1st position in the dental industry was 22.3%, for the 2nd position it was 7.9%, and for the 3rd position it was 4.4%. Notably, there was a 14.4 percentage point difference between the 1st and 2nd positions, highlighting the importance of achieving the top ranking.

1. CTR for 1st Position in the Dental Industry is 22.3%, 2nd is 7.9%

In this survey, the CTR for the 1st search ranking position in the dental industry was 22.3%. The 2nd position was 7.9%, and the 3rd position was 4.4%, with a 14.4 percentage point difference between the 1st and 2nd positions.

The click counts, impression counts, and CTR by search ranking are as follows:

According to the data, the 1st position recorded the highest CTR at 22.3%. On the other hand, the CTR gradually decreased to 7.9% for the 2nd position and 4.4% for the 3rd position, suggesting that even a one-position drop in search ranking can significantly impact click acquisition in the dental industry.

However, it is important to note that the impression count for the 1st position was 3,630, which is a smaller sample size compared to the 299,058 impressions for the 2nd position and 158,349 impressions for the 3rd position. While the CTR for the 1st position is high, this figure alone should not be treated as the standard value for the entire dental industry; it needs to be considered alongside the large impression counts for positions 2 and below.

In practice, in addition to measures aimed at achieving the 1st position, improving the clickability of pages already ranking in positions 2 to 5 is also a major area for improvement.

2. Significant Difference in CTR for 1st and 2nd Positions Compared to the SEO Industry

When comparing the CTRs of the dental industry and the SEO industry, a significant difference was observed for the 1st and 2nd positions. The CTR for the 1st position in the dental industry was 22.3%, which is -20.7 percentage points lower than the 43.0% in the SEO industry. For the 2nd position, the dental industry's CTR was 7.9%, compared to 35.5% in the SEO industry, a difference of -27.6 percentage points.

*The difference is calculated as "Dental Industry CTR - SEO Industry CTR".

This comparison indicates that even with high rankings, clicks are not concentrated as much in the dental industry as they are in the SEO industry. The difference was particularly large for the 2nd position, at -27.6 percentage points compared to the SEO industry.

This result suggests that in dental-related searches, users may be comparing multiple options in the search results rather than simply clicking in order from the top. Users looking for a dental clinic likely choose pages that seem suitable after considering factors such as location, treatment details, operating hours, reviews, and booking methods.

Therefore, for dental websites, it is crucial not only to focus on search rankings but also to clearly communicate "what kind of dental clinic it is," "what services are offered," and "which region's patients the information is for" in the titles and descriptions displayed in the search results.

3. Significant Room for CTR Improvement in 2nd, 4th, and 5th Positions with High Impression Counts

In the current data, the 2nd position had the highest impression count at 299,058 and the largest number of clicks at 23,693. Although the CTR is 7.9%, its large impression count means that even a slight improvement in CTR can easily lead to an increase in clicks for this ranking range.

For example, with an impression count of 299,058 for the 2nd position, a 0.1 percentage point improvement in CTR would theoretically lead to approximately 299 additional clicks. A 1.0 percentage point improvement would result in a difference of approximately 2,991 clicks. This demonstrates that not only measures to further improve rankings but also improving the visibility in search results hold significant value.

The same applies to the 4th and 5th positions. The 4th position had an impression count of 160,720 with a CTR of 2.7%, and the 5th position had an impression count of 158,060 with a CTR of 1.6%. Both have large impression counts, indicating potential for increasing clicks through improvements in titles and descriptions.

On the other hand, the 8th position has an impression count of 144,482 but a CTR of only 0.4%. The 9th position has an impression count of 41,709 with a CTR of 1.2%, which is higher than the 8th position despite the lower ranking. This suggests that CTR is not solely determined by ranking, and can vary based on the degree of alignment with search intent and the appeal of the content in the search results.

In the dental industry, impression counts can be high for searches including symptom names, treatment categories, and regional names. For such pages, it is important to convey not just the "dental clinic name" but also the treatment details and regional relevance that search users are looking for in the search results.

4. Conclusion

This survey found that in the dental industry, the CTR by search ranking was 22.3% for the 1st position, 7.9% for the 2nd, and 4.4% for the 3rd. The difference between the 1st and 2nd positions was 14.4 percentage points, indicating the importance of high rankings, especially the 1st position, in the dental sector.

However, when compared to the SEO industry, the CTR for the 1st position in the dental industry was -20.7 percentage points lower, and for the 2nd position, it was -27.6 percentage points lower, showing a significant difference. This suggests that even with high rankings in dental searches, users are likely comparing multiple options in the search results.

Furthermore, the 2nd position had a large impression count of 299,058, and it was found that even a slight improvement in CTR can significantly impact the number of clicks. It is worthwhile to work on improving the CTR of already displayed pages in parallel with measures to further improve search rankings.

For SEO and web managers of dental sites, it is important to look not only at "what the ranking is" but also at "how many clicks are received at that ranking" and "whether the page is chosen relative to its impression count."

In particular, pages ranking in positions 2 to 5 with high impression counts have the potential to improve traffic by reviewing the consistency of their titles, descriptions, and page content. In the dental field, information design that allows users to click with confidence is expected to become increasingly important in future SEO strategies.
