elleThermo, a company dedicated to energy conversion from unused heat, has confirmed the potential for power generation and local temperature reduction using its core technology, STC (Semiconductor-Sensitized Thermal Cell), within KDDI's AI data center verification environment. This demonstration marks a significant step toward commercializing STC for waste heat utilization and is the first to observe local cooling behavior during power generation. elleThermo is a startup originating from Tokyo Institute of Technology (now Institute of Science Tokyo) focused on implementing STC technology. The experiment took place at the KDDI Telehouse Shibuya Data Center, opened in April 2025. By placing STCs within a server rack utilizing both air and liquid cooling, the team measured temperature changes during discharge, suggesting that the STC can convert waste heat into electricity while simultaneously providing a local cooling effect. elleThermo will continue its efforts to establish energy-saving and energy-generating technologies for the AI era.
