Uniqconn, a South Korean company providing next-generation connectivity solutions that fuse semiconductor technology with millimeter-wave wireless communication technology, has announced its "UC LINK®" short-range wireless high-speed data transmission solution, which eliminates the need for physical cables and connectors, and its V-band (60GHz millimeter-wave band) compatible RF transceiver IC, "UC60S10".
The "UC60S10" is a product that achieves high-speed data transmission of up to 6Gbps in short-range environments. By wirelessizing connections that traditionally required cables, connectors, and slip rings, it contributes to increased design freedom, reduced maintenance burden, and improved operational efficiency in various fields such as industrial robots, factory automation (FA), and medical devices.
KEY FIGURES
Background of Development and Conventional Challenges
Conventional connection methods using wired cables and physical connectors faced the following technical and cost challenges in high-speed data transmission and compatibility with harsh operating environments:
Increased Signal Loss (Skin Effect) As communication speeds increase, signal loss in conductor paths becomes larger, degrading data quality. To address this challenge, the adoption of high-performance materials and advanced manufacturing processes becomes necessary, leading to increased manufacturing costs.
Impact of EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) on Signal Quality Electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the 1-9GHz band, leaking from cables and connectors for wired and wireless signal transmission, can affect signal quality. This necessitates the addition of noise suppression components and increases in manufacturing processes, contributing to cost burdens.
Constraints Associated with Mechanical Connections Physical connectors are prone to wear and tear and are easily affected by water, dust, corrosion, and pin damage. Furthermore, high-precision alignment is required during connection, creating burdens in equipment design and operation.
Innovations and Key Features of "UC60S10"
The "UC60S10" utilizes 60GHz band wireless transmission and reception technology to eliminate the need for physical cables and connectors, achieving stable data transmission even at high speeds exceeding 5Gbps.
Ultra-High-Speed, Low-Latency Transmission Supports data transmission of up to 6Gbps in short-range environments. Verification using an evaluation kit confirmed a total jitter of 0.35UI (BER: 10^-12) at 6Gbps and 0.44UI (BER: 10^-12) at 10Gbps at a communication distance of 1cm, demonstrating high communication quality.
Flexible Communication Methods According to Application Supports wireless communication of up to approximately 50mm using a patch antenna, and up to approximately 15m using a Polymer Tube as a transmission medium, allowing for system design tailored to specific applications.
Compact, Low-Power Design Employs a 3.5mm x 3.5mm x 0.8mm FCBGA package. Power consumption is low, at 120mW in transmission (TX) mode and 87.5mW in reception (RX) mode, making it suitable for integration into devices.
High Environmental Resistance and Design Freedom Eliminates the need for high-precision alignment required by conventional mechanical connectors due to the absence of physical contact. This allows for a wider design tolerance range, contributing to more stable system operation. The operating temperature range is -20°C to 85°C.
Main Applications
Robot Applications
Wireless Robot Arms Wireless connections to end effectors and grippers enhance the mobility and design freedom of robot arms. It also reduces wear on physical contact points, facilitates easy replacement of end effectors according to application, improves work efficiency, and reduces costs through simplified system design.
Replacement for Slip Rings in Robot Joints In robot joints requiring 360-degree rotation, conventional slip rings can be replaced with wireless communication. This suppresses contact wear, reduces maintenance load, extends lifespan, and is expected to lower costs through system simplification.
Modularization of Production Lines and Robots By configuring robots in a modular structure, a flexible system configuration can be achieved where modules such as end effectors can be exchanged according to the production line and application, while the main arm remains common. This facilitates adaptation to changes in product items and processes, contributing to improved operational efficiency and reduced development and maintenance costs.
Improved Maintainability and Security through Wireless Debugging Chip-to-chip wireless communication using UC60S10 enables wireless debugging, which traditionally required cable connections. By reducing the need for device disassembly and physical connection work, it improves maintainability, enhances security through encryption, reduces EMI (electromagnetic interference), and increases freedom in enclosure design.
Improved Maintainability for Medical Surgical Robots Allows for easy attachment and detachment of modules after surgery for cleaning and maintenance, contributing to more efficient maintenance operations and improved maintainability.
