Contemporary calligraphy artist TONTOKU will hold his first overseas solo exhibition, titled 'LO SPAZIO TRA IL SEGNO E IL SILENZIO' (The Space Between Signs and Silence), in Sardinia, Italy, from July 22 to 24, 2026. This exhibition is supported by the Mayor of Sardinia and will be conducted as an international cultural exchange event merging Japanese culture with contemporary art.
TONTOKU focuses on 'Bokusho' (ink imagery), an art form that uses ink and lines to express emotions, prayers, and silence, rather than the traditional 'calligraphy of beautiful characters.' His work has garnered attention from overseas through social media, leading to exhibitions in New York, Madrid, Paris, Miami, and other locations worldwide. He is currently under contract with 'Galleria Azul' in New York and 'Van Gogh Art Gallery' in Spain.
This exhibition began with a chance encounter with Italian fashion designer Filippo Grandulli. Impressed by TONTOKU's work, Grandulli made a direct presentation to the Mayor of Sardinia, leading to an official offer to host a solo exhibition, thus realizing this international project.
The exhibition will feature not only displays of his art but also live performances of painting directly onto fabric to create dresses on the spot, calligraphy workshops for international visitors, and experiential exhibits that fuse Japanese culture with contemporary art.
TONTOKU's works incorporate 'imperfections' such as ink bleeds, blurring, distortions, and whitespace. These are not merely calligraphy works, but messages conveying that 'it is valuable even if it is not perfect' and 'people are beautiful just as they are.'
A crowdfunding campaign is currently underway to support exhibition costs and cultural outreach (achieved its full goal on the first day).
