URAKATA Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Kazunori Fujisawa, hereinafter 'URAKATA') supported the establishment of a visual identity and the renewal of the website for the online community 'Editorial...' led by Tomoko Kodera, an editor and producer who serves as the representative of Koshin Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Meguro-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Tomoko Kodera, hereinafter 'Koshin').

URAKATA has been accompanying Koshin Co., Ltd. since its establishment, supporting them in areas such as management, business promotion, and creative production. Koshin Co., Ltd. has been developing businesses centered around editing, producing, and community management, based on the philosophy and experience of Tomoko Kodera as an editor and producer. URAKATA has been involved as a behind-the-scenes supporter to realize Kodera's 'inner voice'.

In this project, within this continuous supportive relationship, URAKATA implemented the establishment of a visual identity and the renewal of the website for 'Editorial...', an online community led by Kodera herself, with the concept of 'unlearn' (intentionally letting go of what you have learned / positively letting go of prejudices and habits).

Through communication with Kodera, URAKATA consistently handled the establishment of logos, colors, and tones, as well as the planning, design, and production of the website. They constructed a visual system that maintains a consistent presence across media and a web guide that allows members to comfortably engage with words, with SNS as the main point of contact for the community.

Project Background

At the 'Editorial...' 3rd Anniversary Event

'Editorial...' is an online community led by Tomoko Kodera, an editor and producer.

Kodera has been involved in numerous notable works, including the photo collection 'Sincerely yours...' by Minare Tanaka and the photo collection 'TRACE' by Komu Dot. She has been creating content that moves people's hearts across the fields of publishing, photography, video, and branding. Additionally, her Instagram has an exceptional number of followers for an editor, and she continues to form communities with unique perspectives and values through online and offline activities.

On the other hand, 'Editorial...' is not just an SNS platform but also a brand where creativity and community are strongly connected. Based on the power of handling 'words' cultivated as an editor, they collaborate with professionals in various fields such as web, graphics, photography, and video to develop creative direction that transcends expression and experience. Furthermore, the community, which has high energy and action, forms strong relationships both online and offline, which is a unique and significant characteristic of 'Editorial...'.

At the 'Editorial...' 3rd Anniversary Event

Therefore, there was a need to design a brand experience that can feel a consistent philosophy and atmosphere across multiple touchpoints such as Instagram, websites, and offline events.

In this project, we constructed a visual identity that creates a unified presence at every point of contact while balancing the personal worldview of Kodera and the creativity and community nature of 'Editorial...'.

URAKATA's Support Content

URAKATA took on the art direction of translating the community's philosophy into visual language through dialogue with Kodera.

1. Conceptualization and Visualization

Starting with the core concept of 'unlearn' for the community, we organized the philosophy and atmosphere of 'Editorial...'.

'Intentionally forgetting what you have learned. Positively letting go of prejudices and habits. Looking back at your life with your own words.'

We incorporated this philosophy of 'Editorial...' into logos, colors, and tones.

2. Design of Visual Identity

We used a font that combines intelligence and cuteness as the base to express the quiet presence of 'Editorial...'. Considering that the main point of contact is the web for this online community, we repeatedly verified the differences in visibility and impression for each usage environment.

To embody Kodera's policy of 'Online but ultimately analog', we designed a logo system that can be finely adjusted in shape and line thickness according to the platform, maintaining a consistent impression across media.

3. Establishment of Color System

We established the above three colors as the main colors.

By carefully designing the subtle color differences from black to gray and the contrast and area ratio with a soft yet non-flattering pink, we designed a tone that quietly supports the community's philosophy without excessive decoration.

4. Website Renewal

On the website, we placed a monochrome tulip as a symbolic visual to visualize the philosophy of 'Editorial...'.

The tulips used in the visuals were selected one by one by Kodera herself from those imported from the Netherlands for this shoot. They express the presence that combines delicacy and strength, symbolizing the brand's worldview.

The photography was done by a photographer trusted by Kodera for many years.
