Optyino.ai (Optino AI) is a GEO/AIO/LLMO platform that visualizes and optimizes brand exposure in the AI search era. Using accumulated AI response logs, we analyzed how often generative AI cites pages that match the top 10 Google search results for the same query.
This survey targeted 48 'recommendation' prompts across various industries, including finance, housing, logistics, education, household management, and travel goods. We analyzed 186 AI responses collected between July 7, 2026, and July 10, 2026.
Survey Summary
Out of the 973 pages cited by generative AI, only 251 (25.8%) matched the top 10 natural search results (excluding ads) for the same query on Google's Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
Among the 251 matches, the average ranking was 3.05, the median was 2, with 67.3% (169) ranking within the top 3 and 79.7% (200) within the top 5.
This means that 74.2% of the pages cited by AI are outside the top 10 search results, but when they are within the top 10, higher-ranked pages are more likely to be cited.
Daily analysis showed that the match rate decreased from 25.7% on July 7, 2026, to 21.4% on July 9, 2026, before rising to 32.2% on July 10, 2026.
By domain, the match rate was highest in life services at 60.0% (out of 30) and lowest in logistics and procurement at 0% (out of 34), with a maximum difference of 60% depending on the domain.
Additionally, among the 722 unmatched pages, 232 (32.1%) had another page from the same domain in the top 10, suggesting a higher potential overlap at the domain level.
Survey Background
Whether a company's information is cited in generative AI responses is a new metric for brand exposure in the AI search era.
However, it is still unclear how AI selects the pages it cites.
A key question for companies considering GEO/LLMO/AIO strategies is whether the traditional SEO principle that 'higher-ranked pages are more likely to be exposed' applies to AI responses as well.
Therefore, Optyino.ai directly compared the pages cited in generative AI responses with the top 10 Google search results for the same query to investigate the degree of overlap.
Main Survey Results
Only 25.8% of the 973 pages cited by AI matched the top 10 Google search results.
Out of the 973 cited pages, only 251 (25.8%) matched the top 10 SERP results for the same query.
The remaining 722 pages (74.2%) were either outside the top 10 or not included in the SERP data collected this time, indicating that most of the information sources cited by AI are outside the top 10 search results.
However, it is important to note that this data alone does not distinguish between pages outside the top 10 and those not included in the SERP.
This result suggests that AI citations are not simply following the top-ranked pages in search results but may also be selected based on other criteria or sources of information.
When matched, 67.3% were within the top 3 — higher-ranked pages are more likely to be cited by AI
Among the 251 matches within the top 10, 67.3% (169) were within the top 3.

When focusing on the 251 matches within the top 10, the average ranking is 3.05, the median is 2, with 169 (67.3%) within the top 3 and 200 (79.7%) within the top 5.
Pages ranked 1st in Google search results account for 107 out of 973 (11.0%), indicating a tendency for AI citations to be more concentrated on higher-ranked pages when they match the top 10.
SEO strategies based on search rankings do not guarantee that a page will be cited by AI, but if it is cited, higher rankings may work to its advantage.
