Shinzo Shimada (1933–2016) was a Western-style painter born in Yokosuka, a member of the Japan Art Academy (1999), a Person of Cultural Merit (2004), and the first director of the Yokosuka Museum of Art (2007–2011). Shimada dedicated his career to 'translating' Cubism—originating in France—into a uniquely Japanese visual language. Through his original human figure style called 'Katachibito' (lit. 'shape-people'), which integrated everyday scenes into geometric spatial compositions, he opened new possibilities for figurative painting.

On the 10th anniversary of his passing, the museum will display approximately 130 items from its collection for the first time in their entirety. The exhibition includes oil paintings depicting Yokosuka, drawings created in Paris, prints, and archival materials such as easels and palettes.
