Since early July 2026, heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread flooding and landslides in southeastern Bangladesh, particularly in the Chittagong region. Damage has been confirmed across a broad area, including Cox's Bazar and Bandarban, severely disrupting daily life※1. Japan Platform (JPF) is assessing the damage and humanitarian needs while preparing for emergency relief operations through its member NGOs.
According to the latest report※2, over 1 million people across 10 districts have been affected, with approximately 36,500 people forced to evacuate. Levee breaches have been reported in Moulvibazar, and road blockages and flooding have worsened access in various locations. There are growing concerns about prolonged displacement, along with rising needs for food, safe drinking water, healthcare, and sanitation services.
JPF Emergency Relief and On-Site Needs Assessment
JPF has decided to conduct on-site assessments of the disaster situation and relief needs through its member NGO, Peace Winds Japan (PWJ). JPF will coordinate the delivery of essential supplies such as water, food, household items, hygiene kits, and shelter materials to protect the lives and livelihoods of affected populations.
PWJ has been providing continuous humanitarian assistance in Cox's Bazar since 2017 under the 'Myanmar Refugee Support' program and has previously responded to flood-affected communities in the region. Leveraging its accumulated experience and local networks, PWJ will deliver rapid and effective relief.
