The 'Comhbo-tei Monthly Meeting' is a lecture series hosted by the Community Mental Health & Welfare Organization (COMHBO). Under the banner of the 'Easy-to-Understand Mental Health Lecture Series,' it features diverse guest speakers. Participation is open to everyone, including individuals with lived experience, families, healthcare professionals, and educators.
The 105th meeting, titled 'Can Weaknesses Become Strengths? The Concept of Barrier Value,' will be held online on June 6, 2026, from 14:00 to 16:00 (on-demand viewing available).
The guest speaker, Dr. Shota Fukuba, is a psychiatrist and Deputy Director of Bibai Suzuran Clinic in Hokkaido. Despite becoming nearly blind in his mid-30s due to retinitis pigmentosa, he continued his medical career. He is the author of 'What a Blind Psychiatrist Learned After Losing His Sight.'
Dr. Fukuba struggled with the idea of continuing his practice after losing his vision but discovered the concept of 'Barrier Value'—the idea that barriers (disabilities or inconveniences) can create new value. He has established a unique clinical style that utilizes senses other than vision. This lecture aims to help participants re-examine their own 'barriers' and discover hidden value within their daily challenges.
Participation fees are 2,500 yen for the general public, 1,500 yen for COMHBO supporting members, and 6,000 yen for group participation (up to 3 people). The application deadline is June 3, 2026.
