7th Denryusen TSEC to Challenge the Limits of Shogi AI (July 10–11, 2026)

The AI Denryusen Project (President: Hiroshi Matsumoto), a nonprofit organization, will host the 7th Denryusen TSEC (official name: 7th Denryusen TSEC - Non Static Rook Specified Position and First-Move Zero Time Match) over two days, on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026.

This year’s TSEC will feature a specified-position match centered on popular formations among shogi fans, such as 'Gote-gata' (Counter Formation) and 'Aifuribisha' (Double Ranging Rook), collectively known as the 'No Static Rook' match. Additionally, the second stage will be conducted under an extremely experimental rule: the first player (sente) will have zero main time (only a 2-second increment per move), while the second player (gote) will have 10 minutes plus a 2-second increment. The PV for the Denryusen theme song will also be released simultaneously. Don’t miss this intense intellectual battle between cutting-edge shogi AIs.

The first stage begins with specified positions popular among shogi fans, such as 'Gote-gata' and 'Aifuribisha'. Unlike Static Rook games, these positions lead to dynamic, forceful battles and complex mid-to-endgame struggles, offering a fascinating look at how AIs develop unconventional strategies and demonstrate superior positional judgment beyond established joseki.

The second stage features an extreme asymmetric time rule: the first player has zero main time (only a 2-second increment per move), while the second player has 10 minutes plus a 2-second increment. This setup forces the first player into split-second decisions from the opening, while the second player can leverage their time advantage to counter strategically. This thrilling format will push AI time management—a critical function—to its limits.
