[Machida City, Tokyo] July 18th is "Nelson Mandela International Day"

Machida City, which serves as a host town for South Africa, has been promoting international understanding by deepening exchanges with the country on various occasions and introducing its culture and lifestyle to citizens.

Furthermore, every year on "Nelson Mandela International Day" on July 18th, social service activities are carried out in cooperation with the South African Embassy and others. Through these initiatives, the spirit of social contribution and coexistence, which are Mandela's ideals, are conveyed to citizens.

In fiscal year 2026, cleanup activities around Machida Station will be held on International Day with citizen participation. In addition, to promote awareness and understanding in advance of the day, panel exhibitions and other events will be held at the City Hall to deepen understanding of South African culture and Mandela's ideals.

*Host Town: A local government that aims to foster human, economic, and cultural exchanges with three countries/regions through the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, from the perspective of promoting a sporting nation, globalization, regional revitalization, and tourism promotion.

*Nelson Mandela International Day: An international day established by the United Nations to honor the achievements of former South African President Nelson Mandela. In tribute to his 67 years of dedication to the struggle for human rights and social justice, it calls for 67 minutes of social service on his birthday, July 18th.
