To strengthen measures against the red-necked longhorn beetle (Aromia bungii), which is showing a trend of expanding damage, subsidies will now be newly applicable to trees other than fruit trees, which were previously excluded from the conventional subsidy system. This aims to prevent the spread of damage, preserve trees, and mitigate environmental impact.
The red-necked longhorn beetle is designated as an invasive alien species. Its larvae bore into and destroy the inside of trees in the Rosaceae family, such as peaches, plums, Japanese apricots, and cherry blossoms, causing them to die. The law prohibits the transport, movement, and breeding of live specimens. If found, they should be killed on the spot, and the prefectural development bureau, city hall, or JA (agricultural cooperative) should be contacted. Also, contact the authorities if frass (sawdust-like excrement) is found on trees.
