Project "MOSSTOPIA" to Create a Moss Utopia Selected for "GREEN×EXPO 2027" International Horticultural Exhibition - Preview Exhibition in Shibuya July 10-12

"MOSSTOPIA," a project active at "100BANCH," a future creation hub that collaborates with the younger generation to create new value under the concept of "An experimental zone to enrich the world 100 years from now," has been selected for the Flower and Greenery exhibition at the 2027 International Horticultural Exhibition (GREEN×EXPO 2027). The indoor exhibition is scheduled to take place from May 22 to May 30, 2027. Additionally, prototypes planned for exhibition at GREEN×EXPO will be available for hands-on experience at the Nanana Festival 2026, held at Shibuya 100BANCH from July 10-12, 2026. Please experience the potential of moss, which could become a new method for urban greening and environmental problem-solving.

"GREEN×EXPO 2027" Exhibition Content

MOSSTOPIA will exhibit a space that appears to be a slice of a future city, realizing its future vision of "Creating a Moss Utopia." We will create "moss proliferation devices" for urban environments by repurposing underutilized urban resources (unused resources) such as traffic cones, outdoor air conditioning units, and concrete blocks. The exhibition space will be designed as a miniature Japanese garden, following principles of Japanese garden design (Sakuteiki).

Future Prototypes Comprising the Exhibition

- Moss Cone

The "Moss Cone" is a moss proliferation device inspired by the similarity between traffic cones, ubiquitous in cities, and moss habitats. Traffic cones, often in warning colors like red and yellow, are typically avoided as they detract from the landscape. Moss, which grows on porous urban surfaces like asphalt and is often perceived as urban grime, is combined with these negative elements. This future prototype proposes "moss" as a new urban green infrastructure (the city's third green space).

- New "Moss x Public Objects" Species

In addition to the Moss Cone, we will exhibit new moss proliferation devices created by repurposing other underutilized urban public objects. We will create future prototypes that explore the potential of growing moss from public objects suitable for moss growth and with potential for utilization, such as outdoor air conditioning units, manhole covers, block walls, and gaps in housing.

About the Project "MOSSTOPIA"

MOSSTOPIA is a transition design project originating from the Keio University Hiroya Tanaka Laboratory, with the vision of "Creating a Moss Utopia." It was selected for the 98th GARAGE Program at 100BANCH. Set in Tokyo in 20XX, where street trees (the city's first green spaces) have fallen and planters (the city's second green spaces) can no longer even be placed outside due to extreme weather, the project aims to proliferate "moss" as the city's new green infrastructure – "the city's third green space."

100BANCH is a complex facility that fosters the creation of new value with the younger generation, who will lead the future, under the concept of "An experimental zone to enrich the world 100 years from now." Established on July 7, 2017, coinciding with Panasonic's 100th anniversary, with the aspiration that "gatherings of unconventional young energy will enrich the future 100 years from now."

Since then, we have supported ambitious young people in taking their first steps toward creating the future by providing a "place" for 24/7 experimentation, advice from leading mentors in various fields, and "opportunities" for dissemination through over 100 events and large exhibitions annually.
