500 Global and JETRO Open Applications for 'J-StarX Silicon Valley Extended Program' to Support Global Expansion of Japanese Startups
[Tokyo, May 28, 2026] 500 Global, a Silicon Valley-based multi-stage venture capital firm, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) have announced the call for applications for the 'J-StarX Silicon Valley Extended Program.' Now in its third year, this program is designed to support the Japanese startup ecosystem and entrepreneurs aiming to challenge global markets. J-StarX is a global entrepreneur and startup development program implemented by JETRO, which also offers various other sector-specific courses.
In recent years, the Japanese startup ecosystem has been at a significant turning point. The scale of Tokyo's startup ecosystem expanded from $25 billion in 2020 to $66 billion in 2024, and major U.S. venture capital firms are increasingly establishing partnerships and physical bases within Japan. However, for entrepreneurs aiming to scale beyond the domestic market, achieving growth in global markets remains a major challenge. This program focuses on bridging the gap between domestic achievements and full-scale growth in international markets.
Over the past two cohorts, 50 startups participated in the Tokyo bootcamp, and 27 of them advanced to the Silicon Valley program. Participating founders have held over 1,100 meetings with potential customers, partners, and investors in the U.S. market.
The 'J-StarX Silicon Valley Extended Program' is an 11-week program consisting of two phases. Selected startups first participate in an intensive bootcamp in Tokyo to prepare for global expansion. Subsequently, selected companies travel to Silicon Valley to engage directly with the local market through meetings with potential customers, partners, and investors.
**Comment from Leonard Lee, Head of Accelerator at 500 Global**
"Interest in Japan-originated innovation in Silicon Valley has moved far beyond simple curiosity. Major U.S. investors are starting to establish their first bases in Japan, and expectations for what Japanese entrepreneurs are creating are higher than ever. Those who can make the best use of their time in the Bay Area are the entrepreneurs who arrive prepared to engage seriously with the local market."
We welcome applications from Japanese startups that have established a track record in the domestic market and are considering expansion into overseas markets.
**Program Period** August 17, 2026 – October 30, 2026
