The overmolded ring, made from BASF's PPSU Ultrason® P 2010, features excellent mechanical and chemical properties, and incorporates a heat-resistant blue color from Avient's Colorant Chromatics™.
High-performance materials enable a safe and reliable feeding experience
Comotomo, a leading innovator in baby care products based in South Korea, has adopted a tinted grade of Ultrason® P 2010 for its next-generation baby bottles, achieving the desired color without compromising safety. The silicone body of the bottle incorporates BASF’s (headquartered in Ludwigshafen, Germany) polyphenylsulfone, Ultrason® P 2010 (PPSU), as a high-quality base polymer. An overmolded ring combines this with a special blue hue developed using Avient’s Colorant Chromatics™ heat-resistant resin coloring technology. This combination ensures the bottle has sufficient strength, while the colored PPSU is approved for food contact under all major standards including FDA, FC, and GB, ensuring a safe drinking experience for infants.
Baby care manufacturer Comotomo adopts Avient-tinted Ultrason® for next-generation baby bottles
The use of Ultrason® provides benefits such as excellent chemical resistance, superior dimensional stability, and resistance to superheated steam. The bottle is safe for use in dishwashers, boiling water, microwaves, and bottle sterilizers. Ultrason® P 2010 offers outstanding heat resistance and impact strength under the high temperature and pressure conditions of silicone overmolding. This innovative baby bottle combines Comotomo’s expertise in baby care products with advanced material solutions from Avient and BASF, delivering peace of mind to parents through high quality, safety, and ease of use.
Hank Choi, Head of R&D at Comotomo, stated: "We are proud to bring this next-generation baby bottle to market in collaboration with Avient and BASF. By combining our expertise in products, materials, and coloration, we have created a product that meets the stringent quality requirements for baby bottles. The proven track records of Avient and BASF were decisive in our decision to partner with them. Both companies have strongly demonstrated their commitment to the highest standards in food safety and product quality, making them ideal partners for Comotomo." This new baby bottle is manufactured at Comotomo’s state-of-the-art facility in Korea and is currently available in China.
Ultrason® is the trademark name for BASF’s family of products comprising polyethersulfone (Ultrason® E), polysulfone (Ultrason® S), and polyphenylsulfone (Ultrason® P). This high-performance thermoplastic is used in the production of water filtration membranes, stylish and durable household and catering products, and lightweight components for the automotive and aerospace industries. Thanks to its excellent properties, the Ultrason® brand can serve as a substitute for thermoset resins, metals, glass, and ceramics. Avient and BASF have jointly developed tinted grades of the high-performance polymer Ultrason® by incorporating Avient’s Colorant Chromatics™ technology for coloring heat-resistant resins, offering customers across various industries a wide range of color options and comprehensive technical support.
