Bayer Yakuhin, Ltd. held a public lecture and an immersive experience event in Yokohama on May 30 and 31, themed 'SOS signs in your body!? Thinking about early care for diabetes and kidney disease with loved ones,' as part of its awareness activities regarding diabetes and its complications. Over 3,000 people attended over the two days, deepening their understanding of diabetes-related kidney disease through lectures by specialists, guest testimonials, and immersive videos. Diabetes, including those in the pre-diabetic stage, affects approximately 18 million people in Japan, meaning one in five or six adults is affected. Chronic high blood sugar increases the risk of complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy. Notably, diabetes-related kidney disease is the leading cause of dialysis initiation, and it is estimated that approximately 40% of type 2 diabetes patients develop chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is estimated to affect approximately 20 million people in Japan, becoming a new national disease. Although diabetes and CKD have few subjective symptoms in the early stages, they affect the entire body even when asymptomatic, making early measures crucial for suppressing the risk of severe progression and maintaining daily life.
