Car camping in an SUV often feels like it will be fully flat, but in reality, there are gaps and unevenness, leading many to feel they couldn't sleep as well as expected.
Bears Rock has been validating car camping mats across various SUV models.
By comparing results from three popular SUV models—the CX-5, Forester, and Raize—they have identified the unique challenges of each vehicle and the key points to creating a comfortable sleep environment.
Why You Can't "Sleep Properly" in an SUV
While SUVs offer a wide sleeping space by folding down seats, gaps and angle differences remain at the seams of the seats. When these bumps press against your lower back or back, it becomes difficult to toss and turn, and pressure on certain parts of your body can impact sleep quality. Even if it looks flat, it can be the reason you feel it's "somewhat difficult to sleep" or "wake up feeling tired" once you lie down.
Comparison Validation Across 3 SUV Models
Bears Rock tested the interior gap conditions and comfort levels when car camping for the CX-5, Forester, and Raize. The results showed significant differences in the location and shape of gaps depending on the vehicle.
### CX-5 The CX-5 was the easiest of the three models to secure a relatively flat sleeping space. There was a slight height difference at the seam, which could cause discomfort when lying down, but using an 8cm mat made the unevenness almost unnoticeable and provided stability during movement.
### Forester In the Forester, a gap of about 7-8cm was confirmed at the seat connection. Without a mat, it's easy to feel discomfort in the back, but laying down an 8cm mat significantly mitigated the impact of the gap, making it easier to maintain a natural sleeping posture.
### Raize Although the Raize is a compact SUV, folding down the rear seats created a space of about 50cm in the foot area, causing the head side to easily dip. Using an 8cm mat suppressed the dipping of the head area due to the mat's tension and improved stability in sleeping posture.
Key Findings from the Validation The validation highlighted that for the Raize, it is crucial not only to address gaps but also to select a mat that can stably support your posture while sleeping.
