The 3D data platform "3D.Core" provided by bestat Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Naoko Matsuda; hereinafter "bestat") has been fully introduced at Shinohara Press Service Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture; President and Representative Director: Masayuki Shinohara; hereinafter "Shinohara Press Service"), a company specializing in maintenance and preservation of press machines, following a proof of concept (PoC).
Background of Introduction
Shinohara Press Service is an engineering company specializing in maintenance and preservation of press machines. It handles press machines from various manufacturers, having worked on over 5,000 models to date. With a focus on the "rebuild & retrofit" method, which improves functionality and operational efficiency while utilizing existing equipment, and preventive maintenance inspections, the company has established 16 domestic bases plus a base in North America, earning high praise from many customers, including major automobile manufacturers and their tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers.
Previously, Shinohara Press Service faced a long-standing challenge of accurately recording maintenance target equipment and sites for which customers had no drawings. For equipment without drawings, it was necessary to first accurately record the structure and dimensions from the actual equipment and create design drawings before maintenance or improvement design. The company had already introduced and operated a high-end laser scanner, but achieving high accuracy required preparation time, equipment, and expertise, limiting the number of personnel who could handle it. On the other hand, there were tasks that did not require such high accuracy, and manual measurement left variability depending on the person measuring. The company had long been searching for "something in between a high-precision scanner and manual work."
Evaluation Points for Introduction
1. **Time required for 3D scanning at customer sites reduced by up to 1/12**
Previously, 3D scanning of maintenance target equipment took about 6 hours with a high-precision scanner, but this has been reduced to about 0.5 hours. Compared to manual measurement, an equal or greater time reduction is expected.
2. **Anyone can easily take photos anytime, without specialized equipment or personnel**
There is no need to arrange large equipment or specialized staff; on-site personnel can simply take photos with a smartphone and convert them into 3D data. Data can now be easily shared with head office staff and customers.
3. **LiDAR function × AI achieves quality usable in practice, independent of the photographer's skill**
The combination of LiDAR and AI was evaluated for enabling 3D data capture with less than 1% error even with a smartphone. Also, because everything is recorded in 3D, "missed measurements" that occurred with handwritten sketches are eliminated, and variability between measurers is resolved. The accumulation of this data and maintenance know-how is also leading to the creation of organizational knowledge and intellectual property assets.

About "3D.Core"
"3D.Core" is an industrial 3D data utilization platform developed by bestat, originating from the University of Tokyo Matsuo Laboratory. It converts various data acquired in real space, such as images, videos, point clouds, and 360-degree videos, into high-precision 3D data, supporting everything from acquisition, generation, processing, to utilization in a seamless manner.
It has been introduced mainly in manufacturing and infrastructure fields, and is used in operations such as digital twin construction, production engineering, equipment maintenance and inspection, and layout planning. This transforms real information acquired on-site into 3D data that can be handled digitally, connecting the real and digital worlds in daily operations.
