Screening Flyer
Starting July 21, 2026 (Tue), the National Film Archive of Japan will host the screening program "Let's Watch on Film! Toei Animation." This program will look back at the rich history of Toei Animation by screening all 67 works (45 programs) on film, starting with short films from the eve of the studio's establishment, early feature films, TV animations from the 1970s that pushed for greater diversity and mass production, works from the 1980s that followed the successful anime adaptations of "Weekly Shonen Jump" manga, and even OVA (Original Video Animation).
★ Highlights of the Screening Program ★
▼ 1 Almost all early feature films will be screened ▼
From the first domestic feature-length animated film "The Tale of the White Serpent" to "Animal Treasure Island," this program will showcase the early feature films that highlight the talent of staff who illuminated the studio's dawn, including Taiji Yabushita, Yasuji Mori, Akira Daiku, Yoshio Otsuka, Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Yoichi Kotabe!
▼ 2 Many media-mix works that propelled the studio to success, such as "Dragon Ball," "Saint Seiya," and "Kinnikuman," will be screened ▼
Numerous works from the 1980s, when Toei Animation (then Toei Doga) entered a new era, will be screened, following the successive successful anime adaptations of manga.
▼ 3 A recreation of "Toei Manga Matsuri" will be held ▼
The screening event "Toei Manga Matsuri," which collectively showed children's works such as anime and tokusatsu, has been loved by children for many years as a major event during school holidays. This program will recreate the "'87 New Year's Gift Toei Manga Matsuri" from December 1986, screening "GeGeGe no Kitaro: The Great Rebellion of the Interdimensional Yokai," "Dragon Ball: The Legend of the Sacred Dragon," and "Kinnikuman: The Great Tournament" as a single program.
▼ 4 "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" and "Majokko Meg-chan" too! TV animations can be enjoyed on film ▼
There are also unique programs where TV animations can be viewed on the original film materials used for broadcast. A total of 8 TV animations will be screened, including globally popular works such as "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" and "Steel Jeeg," and works from the "Majokko Series," the origin of magical girl anime, such as "Majokko Meg-chan," "Mahou no Mako-chan," and "Mahoutsukai Chappy."
▼ 5 Special talk events with guests related to Toei Animation will be held ▼

July 29 (Wed) 7:00 PM "Mazinger Z vs. Great General of Darkness"
August 20 (Thu) 7:00 PM "Saint Seiya: The Heated Battle of the Gods"
▼ 7 Collect stamps to get limited original merchandise ▼
A stamp rally will be held during the screening program. Stamps will be changed weekly (for 7 weeks). Those who collect 3 types will receive an original clear file, and those who collect all 7 types will receive an original acrylic keychain. *Available while supplies last.
This is the first large-scale special animation screening by the National Film Archive of Japan since "History of Japanese Animation Films" in 2004. At that time, the focus was on works from before the war to the immediate post-war period, but this program features approximately half of the works from the latter half of the 1970s onwards, when the anime market was rapidly growing. Animation has now become a major industry in Japan. This is a valuable opportunity to trace the origins and development of its history.
